Default Stage 1 Upgrade

I have a 2008 Road King and went to one harley dealership they said that for the stage one for the electrical part they can do a download and upgrade it. Went to another dealership and they said that i have to buy a different ECM. can anyone tell me which is true

It's a download that raises the rpm limiter to 6200 rpm from 5500 rpm. No change in the ECM.

My dealer actually told me to save my money and not do the stage 1 download... How often are you really gonna red line your bike?? 5900 is good for me and I saved a hundred bux...

it's just a download, no change to ECM, the guy didn't know what he was talking about... I've read from alot of people that the download is worthless though... get yourself a good tuner... TTS Mastertune or PCV are the two major ones to look at.

i too have heard the same from dealership to dealership. i think its a sells gimic. i believe you just need a download. one dealership tried to sell me an ecm telling me if i bought the new ecm now and had it flashed that i could do a big bore kit down the road that way you already have the ecm required for engine upgrades.

I'd like to see the receipt on a job like this, as this recommendation of another ECM is totally bogus. Harley makes one ECM for each year and model and there are two routes to go from them: Stage 1 download and SEST, neither of which involves a hardware change. The Stage 1 is about $150 and is a simple download to the ECM to compensate for changes in the mufflers and/or AC. It will do little for performance since it will still run lean and hot. SEST is a much more expensive software package that allows the rider to make meaningful changes to the bike's EFI functions. It is limited by the narrow-band technology of the stock EFI and is locked into one bike, thus is not transferable. Perhaps the second dealer is referring to a PCV or other third-party EFI controller. Hard to tell without asking them for specifics.

There are other third-party alternatives that many feel are better options, and you can read many opinions on them here.

IMHO I would ga with a Power Commander III or V. Get it from Fuel Moto and they will send it pre-mapped to your bike that's better than the Dynojet canned maps. Their product support in next to none as well. When you do upgrades they will send you a new map at no cost. You can also go in and fine tune your map where on a sert or sest it's more complicated. My PC III works great and the bike runs great. That's my .02 worth. Give Jamie at Fuel Moto a call.

Good Luck

Oh,...... and stay away from the stage 1 downlaod. I had a freind who had injecters changed at the dealer. He had a stage 1 download and had his bike dyno tuned. They re-flashed his ecm but left out the download and all but toasted his engine. Something else to think about. Use the old "k.i.s.s." truism!!

+1 I researched the hell out of this when I had to make the big decision.... after speaking with Jamie from Fuel Moto, I decided that the PCV was the right direction for me, If I make any changes down the road he'll simply send me another map for that configuration.
