I don't know about the fastair but my clear view has made any decision on any new shield easy. The next time I will buy another clear view hands down.

Fastaire 10". I get wind in the face, but no bugs. What's not to like?

Ill probably get bashed from one end of the forum to the other.... but...

I've had both. Fastair 8" with recurve, 8" NON recurve, and now a 9" NON recurve, cut down to an 8-1/2" NON recurve.

I also tried a Clearview recurve, in both 8" and 10" heights

First off, for ME, the recurve was a waste of money. IMHO it did NOT in any fashion what so ever function like a taller shield due to the recurve. In fact, I think I got MORE buffeting around the head/glasses area WITH the recurves. (both brands) even with the 10" Clearview, which was as tall as I have gone and also did HAVE the recurve.

Regarding Clearview:

No way on gods green earth would I wait their STUPID long lead times for a new shield. The ones I purchased were blems. (in stock) I WILL say that their blem quality is outstanding. I could not see ANY defect on either of them. I would not hesitate to buy one if thats what your looking for.

Their shields are made of a harder plastic, which is much more difficult to scratch. But is also more brittle. The ONLY shield I have ever cracked because of it not being perfectly aligned when I went to tighten it down. My OWN dumb fault yes. Second, the ONLY shied I have ever had crack when trying to cut it down. (wanted 1/2" off the top) shattered almost as soon as the saw hit it. NEVER had any other shield do that, in 10+ years of trimming them down.

To be fair, I suspect its simply the harder plastic they use. Much more scratch resistant, but does NOT tolerate cutting very well.

The Fast-airs:

1. Great guy to deal with, very fast shipping, MUCH cheaper shield. You could probably buy 3 of his in different sizes (to experiment with height) for the cost of 1 Clearview RECURVE. And you'll have them in a week, not a month.

2. They ship flat. They are not FORMED to the curve of the windshield. This initially took me by surprise, and it explains the much lower price. However, once on the bike for a week, they tend to hold the shape if you take them back off. But your essentially getting a piece of flat plastic cut to shape, not a formed shield. Non issue as far as Im concerned. One on the bike, it works just as well as a formed shield.

3. I don't think they are as optically clear as the Clearview (nor sold or advertised as such) but I INSIST on being able to look OVER the shield, not through it, so its a non issue for me.

I also tried the Fastair "aero" which is his version of a formed, recurve shield. Again, I think the recurve ADDS buffeting around the helmet, and does NOT equate a taller shield because of the recurve. I don't know if he still offers these, as I know he had major issues with his molder and withdrew them from the market as he could not rely on getting them for sale in a timely manner. Maybe that has changed recently.

So, in a nutshell, the recurve is NOT worth the money, IMHO, and that, and their ridiculous wait times, puts Clearview out of the running for me, unless I was ordering a blem. If you want to look THROUGH your shield, you may prefer the optical clarity of the Clearview. If you look OVER your sheild, save your money and go Fast-air.

MY two cents, my OPINION only.

Now that's a good thorough write up that pretty well covers everything. Thanks for taking the time to put it all out there for us to read.
Excellent job!

I'm in Canada, and I usually get hit with the brokerage fees from UPS, by the time I'm done with the exchange it'll probably cost me $120-$140. Should I just go with the FastAire ? They are about $30. Are the Clearviews worth the extra money ? Would a Fastaire 9" do the same job as a 8" Clearview with the recurve ? Thanks everyone. Sorry for all the questions....

I've put about 25,000 miles on my 8" Fastaire recurve in dark tint. Cut 1.25" off when I had Mean City lower my seat. It's taken a beating from rocks and sand, so I think I'll buy another one this spring. Jim at Fastaire is a great guy and is only about 10 miles from my house. So I ride in and he installs it while we tell lies and shoot the bull! Ride safe.

ww1flyingace -- Excellent write up. Thanks.

rochkes -- How tall are you?

Thanks for the help, a lot more information here than I could've hoped for. I'm planning on a new shield in the near future.
