My other worry is it looks like is is easily stolen but given people's experience with it, it may be safe

Yah, it'd serve some clown right if he stole a crappy part. I had two of them when I first got the Ultra and they were both all over the chart as far as temp and oil level. I got a refund and installed the gauge in the fairing instead.

Great idea alright, until you come back to your bike and find out some one has stolen it because it looks cool. Now what do you do, stick your t-shirt in the oil bucket or a cork?

Had three of them replaced under warrenty. I got tired of them going bad and threw it in the trash. I would not recommend.

Mine is accurate as far as the temperature goes, & if you read the oil level immediately after stopping it will read high. It determines level by how much oil is up on the screen. Even a simple dip stick will read high if you don't wipe the splash off it. The digital just has to drain down a few minutes to give a correct level reading.

Mine did allow oil into the display. From all the negative reviews here I figured it was gone, so I took it apart just for grins. Fairly simple to clean the oil out of the display & off the circuit board & re-assemble. It still works, & I use it as a backup to my dash gauge.

I'm not a big fan of mine, its pretty useless for oil level, although oil temp is handy sometimes. All in all, i wouldn't buy another one in the future.

Not using one. I was going to buy one a couple of years back but after reading too many negative comments I decided against it. I think Harley needs to offer this in an analogue style (like I had on my Sportster), that one worked fine and I'd buy another if it was available for my RK.
