Default Cal to Sturgis info needed

I plan on going to Sturgis this year. My plan is to go from Orange, CA thru Vegas, and stay overnight in or around the Provo,Utah area then on to Cheyenne,Wy and staying the night there and riding into Sturgis the next day. I'm going to do the tent camping thing for the first time. I'm on an Rk, riding solo. Need suggestions on campgrounds to stay in, camping equipment thats rider friendly and possible sites to see along the way. My plan is to do a running riding report with pictures and experiences. I would appreciate any and all information. My schedule and route is open. Thanks for your time.

Instead of going to Cheyenne, I would head north at Rawlins on 287 and stay that night in Casper. It's a more direct route, and my experience is there ain't a whole lot to see in eastern WY. From Casper you would head north on 87 to Buffalo, then east on 90 into Sturgis. There are probably other ways to go as well.

In Sturgis make sure you get to the Full Throttle Saloon. That place will change your life! I went in 2006 and can't wait to get back. When I went, we stayed at the Elkview Campground. Nice place, pretty quiet, decent shower/laundry facilities. I'd stay there again.

If you're just looking to make time, go 80 through WY, but if you're not in so much of a hurry, and want to see some beauty take 70 through CO and north from the Denver area. We just spent a week in the WY/CO area last summer. WY is desolate and blah except the western side. FYI, Rawlins is a pit.

If you have an extra day or two, do CO and hit the side roads. You won't be dissapointed!

That sounds like an epic ride. Good like on the ride to the rally. Can't help you with the route. But for camping advice, it depends what you are looking for. You can find areas from quiet to all nite partying, and everything between. Depends what you are looking for. There are plenty to choose from. I'm sure others here can give you some more info on that. I've stayed in Custer State park a few times. This year, staying at Rush-No-More (nice place), I believe it is across the Interstate to Elkview and about 7miles from Sturgis. With respect to camping gear, I usually buy when I get into the area and just throw it away when I leave as it only takes a day to get from my driveway to Sturgis (about 12-15hrs). Not sure how much gear you plan to pack, but most newer tents these days pack pretty small into the size of a folding chair.

Good luck to you...safe trip...and see you there!

(BTW, nice ride...and what size are those apes do you got on?)

Zach, I was wondering about the camping thing. Do you have to pack up your gear every day so it doesn't get stolen?

Southern and eastern Wyoming is a pit. You want to go the way Johnny's saying.....or you'll wished you had.

If you stay in KOA campgrounds, most of them have the cabins now. The cabins have a plastic mattress (like the one you had in jail. LOL). You just have to bring a sleeping bag. If you can get the reservations, that's what I'd suggest......a whole lot easier than packin and unpackin a bunch of camping stuff.

I would not leave anything of real value behind. Tent, sleeping bag should be fine....sox, underwear, stuff like that. But I'd not leave anything of value.

Here's what I'd do:

Provo to Idaho Falls Idaho, I-15 North 255mi.
Idaho Falls, Id-Jackson Hole Wy-100 mi. Pretty easy ride.(go see the Tetons)
Enter Yellowstone thru south entrance exit East entrance to Cody-176mi
Cody to Red Lodge Mt.-63mi(you're riding the Chief Joseph Highway and Beartooth Pass, Red Lodge is a real biker town.
Red Lodge to Billings Mt-61mi.
Billings Mt to Sheridan Wy.-130mi.Check out the Custer Battlefield Natl. Monument,You'll get a real history lesson there the Native American Rangers tell you their side of ths story.
Sheridan Wy. to Sundance Wy-165mi. be sure to check out Devils Tower
Sundance to Sturgis-51mi.
Don't know how much time you have but there's about a 1000 miles here.
About 50/50 Interstate/2 lane but get a map and you can cut out most of the interstate.
Personally one or two days of Sturgis is all I can stand anymore .Gettiing there is the good part. This route is about 250 miles further than the direct route I80-Cheyenne but if you haven't ridden it it would be a shame to miss. I live here and hate I80 it's bumper to bumper tractor trailer rigs.Save I80 for the trip home if you're short on time. You can cruise 85 accross the state if you have to.

You know what I'm talking about. I live in the NW and am minutes from the Cascades, high lakes, and beautiful rides galore. But after being in the Rockies for 4 days, our rides pale in comparison.
