My dad has a 05 RK standard and is looking for a smaller windshield. His windshield is 22" from the headlight cutout to the top. Is this stock height? Where is a good place to get a shorter windshield without buying all the hardware and mounting stuff. Just the lexan it's self? Thanks for you help guys!! Bryan
I have a Cee Bailey windshield. It is the short, wide version for the Road King. My Road King is an 07. I'm 5'-9" on a good day. The top edge of the shield is 18 and 7/8 inches above the top of the headlight. The length of the shield from the top part of the headlight cut out to the top edge of the shield is 18 inches. Put another way, the windshield is 18 inches deep above the headlight and the headlight cut out in the windshield allows for a 7/8th inch clearance around the headlight.
I did not have to cut the shield to see over it and it is still good protection to tuck behind if the weather gets really ugly. The extra width provides some extra protection and I definitely like the lower profile for looks and handling, in addition to the safety if you have to ride without being able to clean the windshield (dirt from the road in a rain storm, bugs, etc...)
The windshield takes stock Harley windshield mounting parts with no need for drilling. I'd order new gasket tape from Harley (only goes on one side of the shield) if I was going to refit the original metal mounting pieces. Not very expensive. You could probably make your own out of double sided tape from a paint supply place, but I'd still go with the original Harley stuff. Just start the windshield bolts and slowly tighten and add more mounting bolts as the shield is pulled into place. Not difficult, just go slow and use a thread locker like Locktite. Torque to specs. You may want order extra long bolts to account for the extra thickness of the Cee Bailey material (Lexan). Harley actually has two lengths of windshield mounting bolts as there are different thicknesses of metal at different mounting points. You can order extra ones of the longer bolts, just to be sure. I was able to use stock length bolts in most of the holes.
This is a substantial windshield that provides good protection and classic good looks.
The least expensive option for him is to have it professionally cut at a plexi-glass shop. Just figure out where he wants his line-of-sight to be and have them cut it just slightly under that. It only cost me $20 when I had mine done.
I switched to a 17" Clearview Recurve. Mounts to the original hardware. Kinda pricey but call them and ask about blems. There was a wait time but with a blem no waiting plus about 20% off so I got a blem and cannot find the blem on it. Thicker lexan than the stock HD shield so no visible vibration. I am very pleased with mine.

I'm pretty sure the stock height is 20 inches. The 22" version is a HD catalog "option".
My '02 had a 17" when I got it but the buffeting over the top of it about rattled my lid off. I tried the 20 and it was only partially helpful. I went with a 22" from Cee Bailey and solved the problem completely. Yes, I see over the top of it only if I sit up very straight. Otherwise I'm looking through it, but that ain't a big deal at all for me (Keeps the bugs outta my face).
As yes, Cee Bailey is the place; good quality, great service.
Interestingly enough, I was in the same situation only headed in the opposite direction. The stock shield that came on my '08 RK is 20" (measured from the headlight cut-out to the top of the windshield). I found a fellow RK owner who had a 22" for sale. I bought it and it made a huge difference. I now have my original 20" sitting in the house without a bike to go with it. It is the OEM detachable windshield complete with factory hardware just as came on my bike when I bought it in June, '08. I'd be willing to sell it to someone who would give it a good home.
road king classic and 5feet 8.5" ..replaced with clearview with recurve
17.5" from actual headlight to top..17" of plastic
i am able to see over the shield at all times..and it works well for me.
the recurve probably makes it work like a 19".
not cheap but required nothing extra for installation http://clearviewshields.com/shop/manufacturer.php?id=9.
