You do not have to speak into the mic to set SWR. Just key the mike and take your reading. CB is generally AM (amplitude modulation), some are SSB (single side band) but not likely to be found on a bike. One quarter to one half mile is pretty typical due to the limitations the bike imposes on the performance of the antenna. Most of the advice given here is pretty sound. The feed line length can also impact SWR and make sure your connections are good. An SWR that is way off can ultimately trash the final amplifier section of the transmitter so make sure you are about 1:1 and no further out than 2:1. One final thought, the type of terrain has a whole bunch to do with how well you will receive and how well you will be heard.
