Default Rider Test on a RK - Can I Do It?

Well I've tried to get into those darn Basic Riders classes, and they're all filled up. Could try walk-in, but too much of a hassle to keep going every other day to wait to get in. I've had permits for years, but never took the test, but now I'm debating just trying it with my RK Custom. I've been practicing. I can turn the bike around (in a figure 8) within 16 ft wide. The only thing that concerns me is the weaving part - seems pretty tight with the width of the bike.

Has anybody tried to test on a RK before? Do you think if I took off the bags and the highway bars, I'd have a better chance? I believe Ohio's test is the same as other states.

Just curious,

Matt

I agree with venture33. It ain't fun on a big bike. I took the Montana test in 1977 on a CB75K with 10" extended forks. I wouldn't try it again. The tester was real forgiving otherwise I wouldn't have passed.

If you are confident, you can do it!

I left my RK at home and did the Minnesota test with basically a dirt bike with turn signals. The figure 8 and quick stop were so easy the tester started to laugh. A person did the test on a SoftTail right after me.

Yep unless your really sure I'd go another route. The test can be hard enough without already going in nervous about the cone weave.

My local dealer rents Buells using the driving test as a way to promote their rental.

Those beach bars are just not the best for the left-right slow motion of the weave test.

Venture,
I don't know anybody that has a smaller bike. Most of my friends have big sport touring bikes or bikes just as big as mine.

Primo,
I don't have the beach bars on. I have wild1's baby apes.

Does the Ohio exam involve a figure 8, or just a U-turn? I saw a design on the ground at he testing center that looked similar to Vermont's and Texas'.

I can turn the bike around within a space 16 feet wide, essentially two parking spaces. I can do a figure 8 within 4 parking spaces (2 facing each other). But that weave might be really tough with such a wide bike.

Why not pass on the bike you are going to ride all the time...If you cheat and do it on a dirt bike it may come up to bite you latter on when youneed those skills on the bagger!
