Some times on the road you have to ride all day in the rain if your meeting someone a few states over!..I use a gore-tex suit from bass pro , rain can not get up your sleeves and the bibs zip over your boots. I have never got wet with these.
that's the one i use pricey but worth it. i use it for hunting and fishing also.
A good rainsuit is a good investment in riding gear. It's a necessity. Unless, of course, you choose to simply just get off the road when you suspect it's going to rain (like someone else posted). Personally, that wouldn't even occur to me (unless it's such a hard rain that it becomes a safety issue... then yes, of course...head for shelter). I've driven in the rain lots...especially when we travel...Always seem to run into in somewhere along the road. Actually, riding in the rain is really not that bad. It can be quite enjoyable...that is if you have a good rain suit and you can keep warm and dry.
I spent a little more than most on my suit ... because I have had my fair share of riding cold and wet. I just simply don't like it. I often even wear my rain suit even if it's not raining, but if I'm cold. It also acts as a wind suit. Keeps me toasty warm, and ads a whole other level of comfort on the road. I love it!
I use the good HD ones. You get what you pay for. If you go on any kind of trip..you will probably need a good rainsuit. I started out using some cheap yellow plastic rain suit and holy crap was it hot..like a sauna. These ones are made with microfiber so they do breathe. Having said all that if you hit a heavy enough downpour (my bud and I rode through rain so hard coming home from Sturgis last year that cars were pulling over) you will get wet but it's misrable without a good suit. Bite the bullet and get a good one you won't regret it.
I recommend the HD suit, also. We drove from VT to Sturgis last year and got wet a lot. The suit worked well and took up just a tiny space. Also, try putting some rubber or latex gloves over your leather gloves to keep them dry.
I use a 2 piece set from Stern's that I got in Wally World. Fairly inexpensive and I get the same use you do and I bought 1 size larger for the coat and it fit fine.
I have the orange and black HD set - works great so far. I used to wear a goretex climbing gear coat and pants but got soaked in them - apparently goretex is only waterproof up to a certain PSI, travelling at 65 on the freewa into a driving rain forces the water thru the membrane, A 20 dollar vinyl suit from K mart would have served me better.
1. get one that breathes and doesn't condense on the inside of the suit!!
2. get one that rounds up into a small bundle.
3. get one that is lite.
4 get a 2 piece that's easy on and off; especially when you''re trying to put it on in the rain.
The best solution for the above 4 is a frog tog and they can be obtained fairly inexpensive.
