This doesn't really answer your question, but I went with Redline w/shockproof on my 08, and cured my tranny problems (well 5th still whines a little but not as bad as did before switching)
What lubricant are you running? Buy 1 quart of Redline Severe Gear lubricant. Drain your tranny, don't forget a new o-ring for the plug, and pour in the Redline. You will be happy. It will shift smoother, find neutral easier and run quieter. I've run it in my 07 SG for almost 30,000 miles. Works for me.
[quote=YT;4672788]Has anyone noticed a loud transmission whine when down shifting (at normal, slow speeds) to first gear on a new, completely stock 09 SG??
Thanks
I know what you're talking about. I have an '09 FLTR stock with 300 miles and every time I shift down to stop it sounds like turbo whine.
Uh...why are you downshifting to 1st gear while riding? I used to instruct for MSF and we specifically taught downshifing to 1st only just before coming to a complete stop. Do it at speed and screw up and you can skid the rear tire and lose control. Also, in almost every case, 2nd is low enough to do just about everything except pull off a dead stop. BTW, same goes for cars...there's no reason to downshift to 1st except at a very slow roll or a complete stop.

You sure are reading a lot into his question and my answer.
what about belt tension? dealer bought me a new tranny when after they did some warranty work they over tightened the belt. I told them it was whining they told me they knew more than me. two days later i brought in a roasted trans. They suddenly got very polite and replaced the whole deal. ...still wont go back there.

I agree with Bilboy! Some people just read way too much into things... I was not talking about downshifting into the granny gear at 10 - 20 mph... It was while approaching a stop only. The whine is as load and as noticeable as the brake squeal on an 08 UC and it is actually a bit annoying! Thanks for the assistance!!
I believe the sound that you hear at slow speed can be heard just by simply pulling in the clutch, no down shifting needed to hear it. I think what you are describing is the sound of the primary chain, as it travels across the auto adjuster. Primary chain whine. Most all of the bikes with the auto adjuster make this sound as also many do with the after market auto adjusters.
