I hit a deer!!! part 2
I suspect that, like me, you'll be watching for deer behind every tree now. Thank God you were smart enough to have your gear on.
When I had my venison encounter the deer added insult to injury by pooping all over me when I hit her. I figured that out in the hospital when I asked my wife what that nasty smell was.
I still get the occasional "deer hunting with a bike" joke at work as well.
Best of luck on your recovery and on getting your bike repaired (quickly).
Mike
I hit a deer head-on last year while going 70 on my '09 SG with 1300 miles on her. Frame was damaged at the neck, so she was totalled
. I wasnt wearing a jacket, so really bad road rash. And yes, I have a new ride. An experience like that really tests your commitment to riding. I never hesitated - both in mourning my totaled bike, and looking for another!
Lesson learned for me? Slow down, stay alert (even in rural areas), and ATGATT.

Like I said in your other thread glad you are ok. Man just looking at that gear makes me cringe at the thought of what it would be like w/o it. Has me second guessing my riding attire.
And if I send you my address can ya send me some deer jerkry??? j/k again
.. It dont take much for sure... Like i said earlier mine wasnt from a deer it was from rain and an oily highway on ramp.. Please take note of this and use extreme caution after a rain.. Or even during... Thank god this guy was wearing a skid lid...
Years ago I hit three deer and a rather large dog - all hits while driving company cages. I never hit a deer since until last year when I put one of the hairy b*st*rds out of its misery on my new RKC. I have a heavy foot (and some say total disregard for the rediculously low speed limits) so I travel fast more often than slow. Funny thing but all hits were at relatively slow speeds (< 60 mph). The hit last year on my bike I was probably only doing 40 (Never even saw the deer).
I have a strong suspicion that if you drive/ride faster the deer don't have time to get in front of you. Now I'm not real anxsious to test this theory but it is something I've noticed.
I'd be interested in hearing what others that have had deer hits think but this may not paint a true picture because those that had high speed hits are probably not around to comment.
At any rate, it doesn't matter how slow you go and how watchful you are, when they want to commit suicide in front of you they will and you may not be able to do a thing about it.
The slower you go, the more you see, the more time you have to react, the less damage if you go down. Badjustbad, sounds to me you need to go slower yet.
Everyone needs to slow down a bit, period, regardless of deer country.
Glad your ok, Mike.
