Last Labor Day my motor grenaded due to cam chain and tensioner failure. It's an 02 EGC 95BB. I picked it up yesterday and after 200 miles I must say I am impressed at this point. It runs out just great! The lower end had to be done complete so the crank went to Darkhorse and got trued & glued. Gear drive now with Andrews 26G cams. A lot of guys say gear drive is noisier, not here. It is now quieter than when it was chain drive. But it is the seat of the pants feel thats noticibly better. Feels much smoother and more solid. Had a lot of "valve train noise" before also and that's all gone.
IMHO, if you are on the fence because of worry about the tensioner issue get the gear drive. But by all means check those tensioners by 20,000 miles so you have an idea of the wear rate and then check them regularly. Ride Safe, Doug
This is why we go geardrive, these tensioners were pulled at 48K kms. Lucky the guy came in for a build when he did, only cost him a cam plate and pump. On the pre-'07 motors always go geardrive if your crank run out will allow it.(max .0035) If not, go the new conversion kit from HD.
Happy Riding!
