Check with "Sleeps In Trees" (Vic) here on the forum. I believe he just did the conversion. Yes it does help as it is the new tensioner system. It also has the updated cam plate whereas you do not have to press the bearings in. If you want gear drive and have no excess crank runout and don't mind a little gear noise, then I would go gear drive. However, if you have crank runout that is out of spec and/or like quiet valve train then the conversion is the way to go.
Disclaimer, I am not even close to a good source of info on this subject. From what I seen on my tensioners a couple days ago,an 07 with 13 k running hard in high heat and Miami traffic, I think they fixed the tensioner issue, there was a little rub mark in the outer tensioner but it was very little, the inner wasdam near perfect. From what I understand the 06 and prior tensioners were spring tensioned so the tensioner had pressure on it all the time the 07 and later are hydraulic and are tensioned withoil pressure from motor speed. So from my experience only with the 07 only I would say it is a logical fix, if there was one needed, and pretty good engineering by the MOCO.
Thanks for the input, I think I will go with Andrews 26 gear cams unless the endplay is too great. I just don't trust the chain drive yet but this may be the way to go in the future if the new style holds up. I'm deaf enough that i won't hear any extra noise anyway.
I am in the process of upgrading my 05, but am waiting on the cams from American Classic Motors, they said it could be up to another 5 weeks, everyone that has done the conversion that I have heard from has been very pleased, I was going to go gear but my runout was to much. Make sure you check that before you order your cams .003 is absolute max, and dont even think about putting them in if you have more than that or it will sound awful and you can end up with busted cam gears which will turn your engine into a boat anchor faster than you can say crank runout. After 2002 the moco quit using timken bearings so it is far more likely that your runout will be higher and more likely out of spec if your ride is newer than 02.
The conversion is a good deal. It also comes withthe newer style high capacity HD oil pump and new chain and tensioners. I am putting my engine back together, have 12k miles on the tensioners and putting them back in, no wear whatsoever.
I'm running the 26N with the conversion on my '05. I like this system better than I did the gears. I had .002 runout and didn't like listening to the noise the gears made. With this '07 oil pump my pressure is now around 50. It's pretty quiet...I'm really satisfied with it. Besides the Andrews cams all other parts are from H-D.
