Anybody have an idea how many units (all models) HD manufactured last year? Just curious to see how they have had to adjust with the economy the way it is.
They are a publicly traded company, and it's in their annual report.
Here's the important numbers you were looking for:
For the full year, wholesale shipments of Harley-Davidson motorcycles were 303,479 units, an 8.2 percent decrease compared to 330,619 units in 2007.
ETA: Since you may be wondering about their 2009 plans:
In the first quarter of 2009, the Company plans to ship between 74,000 and 78,000 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles, a 3.0 percent to 8.5 percent increase versus the first quarter of 2008. However, for the full year 2009, the Company plans to ship between 264,000 and 273,000 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles, a 10 percent to 13 percent reduction from 2008.
I knew that somebody would have the answer. Thank you. That's still a pretty astonishing number when you consider that in order to reach their projections for 2009, HD will produce nearly 23,000 units per month. As an interesting footnote, Indian Motorcycles who was recently resurrected again for the third time plans on producing only 2,000 units for the entire year. It's an apples to oranges comparision, but still a pretty interesting comparion, don't you think?
I don't know how Victory, Yamaha, Honda, etc...are fairing with this economy, but it would seem that HD, being a one trick pony with no other products to sell (jet skis, boats, atv's, snowmobiles, dirt bikes, etc) is weathering the storm fairly well.
