I have a 1984 FLHTC with 60K miles; getting a little long in the tooth. I’m starting to think about upgrading the engine, etc., etc. But since it really needs paint and things fall apart with some regularity it probably makes sense to add a few more dollars to the value of my bike and what I’m like to spend in the next few years and get a newer older bike. My question is what came along in what years? Probably shopping through 2003 or so based on the pricing I see. I’m thinking about another classic, maybe an SK, or maybe an RK which I like a lot except for the missing music. Looking at Craig’s List every day but don’t know enough to judge what options I would be getting based on year. Mostly what I envy is cruise control and switch mounted radio controls. But there are probably a lot of other improvements I don’t know about. Hoping some of the historians here can help.
biggest one was the introduction of the Twin Cam 88 (new for '99?), followed by cruise control and ABS. IIRC, 96" and 6-speed debuted in '07. Pretty sure the subject matter experts will chime in with more specifics shortly.
From the prices I've been seeing I'd be looking at years '96-'98 or '04-'06. Seems like anything up to 98 asking price doesn't change much. Same for '99-'06.
IMO Ultras seem to be the best deals on used Harleys.
