i have a lower back problem also and found the Ultra to be the most comfortable on my back regardless of trip length. Having said that, bars, seat, and backrest need to fit the individual regardless the model you choose or you will not get the full benefit of your scoot.
I too started off with the Sportster, and after 10,000 miles I was ready to buy the Dyna Super Glide, figuring it was a natural "step up". I attended a Harley Demo fleet weekend at the 105th celebration last summer, and literally rode everything (even V-Rods) over the two days.
The Road Glide was my dream bike from the first time I rode on it. So, I went from a Sportster to the Road Glide, and within the first 400 miles on the new 2009 RG, I never want to ride a Sportster or a Dyna again. The handling is a dream for a touring bike and the ride, oh the ride, is just incredible compared to the Sportster.
Get yourself a test ride on the Dyna, the Street Glide, the Road Glide, and the UC and decide for yourself.
Both are great bikes...can't go wrong either way, however comparing a Dyna to a Road King is like comparing apples to oranges. Completely different bikes altogether. Among the non-touring bikes, the Dyna would be my favorite in terms of ride and handling. In the touring class which the Road King falls within comfort is taken to a whole new level. If it's touring that you like, the Road King was built with that purpose in mind.
I just started riding last year. I've ridden about 2,500 miles on my XL1200R. I am looking to trade-in on a Big Twin. H-D's Sportster Buy Back Program is about to end, so I am getting serious. All the threads seem to indicate that the Touring line is the way to go...especially for those of us suffering back pain. (I really want to keep riding.)
Question: Is there truly a difference in ride quality moving from Dyna to Touring?
I like the FXDC and FXDB and feel it may be an easier transition from the Sportster. Admittedly, the Road King is the bike that "speaks to me".
All thoughts are welcomed. Thanks!
A touring bike with the factory air shocks will be the best ride you've ever had. My backs shot and I traded my sporty for an flhtpi last month. best choice I ever made. you won't regret it.
