I just started riding last year. I've ridden about 2,500 miles on my XL1200R. I am looking to trade-in on a Big Twin. H-D's Sportster Buy Back Program is about to end, so I am getting serious. All the threads seem to indicate that the Touring line is the way to go...especially for those of us suffering back pain. (I really want to keep riding.)
Question: Is there truly a difference in ride quality moving from Dyna to Touring?
I like the FXDC and FXDB and feel it may be an easier transition from the Sportster. Admittedly, the Road King is the bike that "speaks to me".
I too thought that Road King was the way to go. I went out and test road a RK and a Street Glide, the SG fit me a lot better thent he RK did. For me it was the SG. Get out to a dealer that allows test rides, or find out where Harley is doing Demo ride and try them out first.
Road Kings are awesome. That was my first Harley. Very easy to ride. Tons of accessories to make your ride comfy and enjoyable. You will only notice the extra weight when righting the bike or if you make an awkward stop. I loved mine. Now have an Ultra and a dyna. For long rides and trips nothing compares to a touring bike. Both bikes are fun to ride. I sometimes think people worry to much about the bigger bikes. You'll be surpised how easy they are to ride. Whatever you choose, ride safe and good luck with that bad back. I know personally how debilitating it can be.
hard to say what will fit your bad back best. one would think one of the touring bikes would be the answer. i've got new bars on mine and i'm on my third seat. still not sure i've cured the burning at the base of my neck. good luck.
Had both a 05 FXDC and now an Ultra, One disk gone in lower back, I put the Sun Downer Seat on the FXDC and never had a problem, couldn't ride the Stock Seat, Now the Ultra is a Whole different animal. Pure Bliss!
I have found that my back gets less sore with a seat that supports my lower back or pelvis. Its fugly but the comfort stitch that comes on some of the touring models works well for me. Keep your posture more upright, back verticle lower legs more verticle. That will allow you to absorb the bumps better.
