I put a new shifter rod and better ends (heim) on last night. On the front lever I used a bolt and acorn nut and on the back lever, just a bolt. Lock washer behind acorn nut made it stick way out and looked clunky and I didn't see a need for a flat washer anywhere. Do you think just using blue Locktite without lock or flat washers will hold? I believe the stock linkage had a flat and lock washer on the front.
I never used any washers but made darn sure had plenty of Loctite.. an old Iron might vibrate loose without a lockwasher but see the need for it on newer ones...

+1 On What JayStronghawk said! Plenty of Loctite and it should hold just fine. That's all I did with mine.
Front: Buttonhead chrome allen thru the lever with a internal star washer & thin nut & blue loctite
Rear: Buttonhead chrome allen, 5/16-24 X 1.25 thru a chrome spacer 5/16 id X 1/2 od X 3/8 long, threaded into the rear lever with blue loctite. I used the spacer to lessen the severe angle between the front & rear levers.
Chrome Hardware is Gardner-Westcott from Reno HD, about $8.00 for all of it
I did pretty much the same as RenoGlide above.
The spacer in the rear is about 1/2" on mine as my shifter rod is about 1" dia.
which puts the threads further from the tranny shifter.
