99 Ultra
Just turned 15.5k, think I'll go ahead and have it checked out. Called dealership today, no record there that it had been done. I hate to part with the $ but a "lot" now is better than a whole lot later.
Tuco069, you said;
"Called dealership today, no record there that it had been done. I hate to part with the $ but a "lot" now is better than a whole lot later."
I guess this means that Harley is not doing the work under the warranty they once offered for this defect?

There was never a "recall" on these bearing. No way, no how.
There was however a policy in place, were HD would pay to repair any damage caused by any bad bearings and replace the bearing, after a failure had occured.
That said, some dealers would change out bearings before they went and put it through warranty, but most bikes are either still running (not enough use yet) or they have failed.
If it was within 5 years of purchase or had less than 80,000 miles it qualified for warranty.
They are not now taking any responsibility for cam bearing failures on these engines, so no warranty on them now.
Absolutely positively false there buddy.

This info is right on. There was no recall. Also there is no rhyme or reason on the failures either. A friend of mine and I bought 99s about the same time. I had bearing failure about the 5,000 mile mark. My friend is still riding his, has in excess of 60,000 with no bearing failure and still running the original tensioners.
Amazing that the tensioners haven't worn through by 60 thousand miles!
As far as i know the only problems was the cam bearings, I did mine before i got 8000 and the tensioner also. If the dealer cannot confirm it has been done just do it, and the tensioner's. Just my 0.02

Another thing to ruin your day.....The 1999 had bad belt drives.....I ride with 4 guys who's belts on their 1999's all broke with less than 10K on them. All are adult riders and never beat their bikes. Just my 2 cents.
