I really don't like to buy NEW motorcycles, but since H-D has finally gotten with the program, I am in the process of purchasing a NEW '09 H-D Ultra, with ABS of course! I've also owned several BMW's, my first with ABS being a 1997 R1100RT. I currently have a 2007 BMW R1200RT (which comes STANDARD) with ABS and was about to depart the H-D fold with my 2006 Road Glide, but with the advent (finally) of ABS I'm staying ! Incidentally, I've owned H-D dressers since 1994!
I've been an ABS advocate ever since watching an ABS demo at a BMW rally in Madison, IN in the late 1980's. The demo was conducted in a school parking lot that had been freshly watered down by the local fire department, with sand thrown in for seasoning! There were 2 BMW's in the demo: one with ABS, the other without, but both equipped with outriggers.
Both bikes accelerated to 60 mph, then panic stopped their bikes. In every instance, the non-ABS bike fell over (but, of course, saved by the outriggers) while the ABS equipped bike stayed upright and came to a controlled stop.
It has been said that under CONTROLLED CONDITIONS a non-ABS machine can stop quicker than the ABS unit, but in panic situations, the ABS equipped unit always wins out! ABS is like cheap insurance, except you always have something tangible to show for it!
