Why all the noise?
Still, AJ's got some nice Beemer preppy ties, almost as good as Lands End with the little BMW blue and white circles. You know you wanna!
...good that you have a sense of humor to go along with the arrogance.
Ride safe!
"To each his own" You like loud, I like mild, they like quiet...... Personally the loud pipes (if you consider the B&E 1.75" pipes on my old 04 EGC as loud), have awakened the sleeping/texting/ phone talking cagers when you roll on the throttle. They were mild until you get into it, which is what I like. Flip side, my wifes Softail she has Samson BG3 Cannons. She loves them, but they are too loud for my liking. Again "To each his own". As far as the handling of the old bike....... go get on a new one. Incredible the difference between my 04 EGC and the 09 Ultra I have now. I plan on installing Reinharts, Big Sucker and either stage one download or PCV after the 1000 mile breakin. One thing we all have in common though, is the Harley we take pride in.
The question was reasonable, not inflammatory and not deserving of some of the self serving off topic answers... ahhh, the forum. You will find some amazing wit and advise here, along with some real crumudgeons and neanderthals (get ready, here they come, and I'm sure they have already stopped reading!)!
We all have choices, and no choice is ever made without consequences. You can choose loud pipes for many reasons... some (although few would ever admit it) is simply for ego gratification and there is really nothing wrong with that until it impinges on the rights of others. Some for "sound quality", some for performance or power, some for better breathing to increase gas mileage.
Some like the sound of a big v-twin, I do and I totally get the "I hate the sewing machine and want the rich tone of my Harley" idea. I had replacement pipes on my Ducati and my BMW R-80 (with bigger carbs too), and am still looking for a pipe to put on my RG that is not offensive but will provide "soul" without loosing performance and without offending my neighbors.
However, with the choice for loud pipes come consequences, and when there are too many loud pipes that serve no reasonable purpose (noise over anything else) you run the risk of offending enough people to the point where the other choice (peace and quiet) will be legislated (here come the freedon flag wavers!). It is that simple, and then those of us who change pipes for all the other reasons will be victims of those who choose "noise".
What is important is that we all still have a choice. However, the choice of "loud for loud sake" may have the unintended consequence of legislating silence. If you are a member of the AMA you already know this and the reality that the objection to the problem (noise) is growing. When the actions of an irresponsible minority impinge on the choices of the rest of us, that is unfortunate.
If you choose loud pipes have some discretion. Like speeding (which I like to do), speed where you are less likely to affect others, like not on a busy street in the middle of town. Similarly, if you choose loud pipes, use your throttle with discretion in crowded areas to minimze antagonizing others. I have no problem with the choice for loud pipes, but when irresponsible actions of a few affect all of our choices then likely we will have no choice!
I am for freedom of choice, yours and mine, good discretion will allow us to keep it!
What's with that?

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
Well, I picked up my bike this morning and, to my delight, my dealer swapped out my noisy Screamin' Earfull pipes for a set of brand new stock pipes from an '09 Ultra. It seems they remove a lot of stock pipes even before delivery. I'm amazed at that. Anyway, I rode the bike 50 miles to work and the difference was astounding. No chattering teeth, no ear pain, able to hear Tchaikowsky on my radio and no, I repeat no note missed when listening to Steppenwolf or the Zeppelin! These pipes are not only well engineered for sound - and allowing a beautiful rumble to pass through - they are gorgeous.
I have restored my poser bike with all MoCo parts. I think their quality is superb across their product line and, in the case of the pipes, a bit misunderstood.
My dealer and I have a wonderful relationship. I seem to show up in full gear and on my bike when the showroom is full of customers who drove their cars in. I ride in every season, in every weather and they respect that. I don't just polish my bikes, I ride them. My dealer treats me very well, and I send him customers by the boatload because he deserves the business. Interestingly, he drives a Volvo. Hmmmm, what do folks make of that?
Been an interesting awakening here.
Perhaps you can help me name my bike. Someone here said I had bought a "poser bike" because it's 12 years old and had only 18,000 miles on it. I agree fully with the comment. Any ideas for a name for a poser bike?
Thanks,
Curt
