At 1,000 miles, I switched to HD Syn3 in all three holes in my 2007 Springer Classic. At once it started shifting hard, with a big clunk, and the motor got real noisy, especially the upper engine; sounded like a big sewing machine. I ran it for awhile longer and after I had enough, I switched back to the original lubes that the bike came with. Immediately the motor quieted back down, and the tranny shifts smooth and easy. I'm taking delivery of a new 2009 Electra Glide Classic this Saturday; synthetics will never be used in it. I live in Wisconsin, so I don't encounter the high heat issues that most of you have. Perhaps that is why I can get away with using real oil.
I now have 1700 miles on our 09 Ultra and the transmission started making noise like a old school bus trans on our ride last weekend. It now shifts very hard and makes a loud clunk. This bike always shifted like a jap bike, very smooth with just a click. I am taking it in to the dealer friday. Any ideas what this might be.

I also tried Harley Syn 3 when when my bike was almost new with the same results. Changed to Mobil 1 in all and it got quiet. Syn 3 is made by Citgo. I think I read on here that syn 3 is a level 3 synthetic, Mobil 1 is level 4.
The dealer just did the 1000 mile service 700 miles ago. They put HD sny. in every hole. I checked the trans oil level first thing. If i were to bet i would say its some thing in the primary area. It has shifted so smooth since new with just a slight click and a short shift throw. Not now it makes my 05 seem smooth and it never did shift good. I take it in saturday and i will post what they find.
The Syn3 is probably the issue. I noticed my 2007 was a lot "clunkier" with Syn3. I have used Mobil 1 Trans Oil now and it is much quieter. The heaviest weight 90/140 I believe works great in the summer. I use 80/90 in the colder temps in NH and may stick with that year round. It shifts like butter!
