Here it goes... I hope I don't get banned for this.... I bought a 09 FLHX and traded in my 06 Yami Road Star Midnight Silverado... I like the handling of the HD, but I don't think it has the "pep" that the Yami did.... My Yami was a 103 with A/C, pipes, and a dyna.... The HD has A/C, pipes, and a tuner.... If I just put a set of cams in will that make a "big" difference or should I do a big bore kit??? Also HD recommends waiting until 1000 miles to change the oil... That seems like a long time for break in oil... I am pushing 200 miles and I am thinking about changing it..... Can I run a synthtic now??? Hopefully I didn't offend anybody.....
First off congrats on the new bike. JMO...bump up the motor right off the bat b/c if you are like me you will end up doing it latter anyhow. Cams can wake things up and you will feel a diff. but not like going to a motor with fully ported heads, pistons and cams.
As far as oil goes I personally wouldnt want to wait that long before changing. I rebuild my engine this winter and dropped the oil after the first 50 miles and will do it again at 500 miles. At that point I will go to syn in the engine.
You didnt offend me...the Yamaha probably did feel like it had something more....different engine setups. Spend sometime reading here you will learn more than you could imagine.

+1 to Hollywoods post and ignore the smarta@@ answers from others.
I agree with the posts so far, cams will help but heads will make the biggest difference. The stock exhaust port is notoriously restrictive, probably deliberatley to sell more Screamin Eagle heads.
In reality 96 inches is heaps, you can probably just do heads and cams and she will be quick enough, however if you want to go big bore then S&S do a 106 kit which you can fit without pulling the motor and machining the cases (unlike the SE kits) which saves $$$.
It seems insane to get a brand new bike and have to change pistons, barrels and heads. Welcome to HD!!
I couldn't agree more with the early oil change. But stay with Dyno oil till 1000 miles. Last few new engines I've had, I changed oil early and often to flush out any impurities during the break in period. It's been bullet proof since. You do need to wait to 1000 before dumping in the synthetic oil in the crank. Of course, Syns in Trans and Primary fine. I've had great success with Red Line Heavy Duty Shockproof in the trans/gearbox. It's a great lubricant. I've had it in at 5-6 bikes and never once had a problem. Besides you can always win a bet or two by telling your rookie Metric friends, and occasionally a Harley owner that you run Peptol Bismol in your trans. Make the bet and then pull the dipstick to prove it... Enjoy, and ride safe.
