Default Cruise Control Problem

Hi - been a while since I made a post - sorry to bring a problem. My cruise control seems to quit for some reason at speeds of 60 or more - doesn't even have to be a rough road. I suspected a weak front brake return spring inside the master cylinder (if the wind causes the brake light to flash, it'll kill the cruise) - rebuilt the cylinder with a new spring - no help. I then readjusted the throttle and idle cables and performed the cruise calibration routine, no help. I checked the roll-off switch - appears to act normal (infinite unless pulled at the stop area). Dammit, I might have to take the bike into the dealer. Although it's under warranty, I hate to take a chance. But, might just be the main module. Any thoughts?

Bad break switch or possibly a pinched wire in the switch housing. Good luck.

Hi Ted - Long time no type My guess is that it is the unit itself - I see the dealer in your future bud but at least it is under warranty!

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I appreciate it. I think it really is a bad cruise module since it has been getting progressively worse as time goes on. It must know it's riding season. Anyway, I doubt if it's a pinched wire since that would prevent me from doing the slack calibration. Also, since the break switch is a normally open switch (infinite resistance), I decided to just disconnect it and see if perhaps it's intermittant which would display the problem I'm having. Problem is still there - which really only leaves the module or a wiring problem somewhere. Made an appointment with the dealer - I sure saved them a lot of work if they'll take my word for it. We'll see - appointment is for the 22nd. I will report back when I find out from them what the problem is (or hopefully, was).

My cruise control was acting up a little and at a time. It would engage and then slowly start creeping up in speed. It would not maintain a constant speed and after about 2 months it quit engaging. I had put chrome switch housings on and i stretched the wires in the switch too tight and that was the problem. I replaced the switch and it's been working fine since. It's been working for about 2 months now with no issues.

I hope this helps.

I haven't tried looking at that as yet - perhaps I will do that tomorrow - good idea and thanks!

I had the same problem last year before and on my tour. The cruise would just drop off and wouldn't re-engage. Later it would but just for a few seconds. I replaced the obvious power switch to no avail.

To make a long story short, it WAS the rolloff switch. We (*******, MI HD) almost replaced the module ($400) but the tech wisely did a second multimeter check of all circuits, and that was the fix. Have had no problems since.

Although I have discounted the roll-off switch - it sure was a suspect! I simply disconnected it and still had the problem (it's a normally open switch). Thanks for the advice.

I know this might sound kind of silly. And you probably already thought of this but do you have any leather tassels hanging on your clutch or break handle. They really create a lot of drag when you get up around 60 plus. This could be disengaging your cruise. The problem could be wind driven.

I don't have any fringes on the brake/clutch levers - thanks for the thought!! Looks like it's gonna be the module to me. I will report back after my service app't on the 22nd.
