Default Cruise control stopped working

02 Ultra Classic 22,000 miles
My Cruise control after about 5 mins it would start picking up speed and just keep going up I would twist the trottle back and it would go off then about a mile it would come back on and picking up speed again. Now it will not come on at all. Does any one have an idea where i should start looking to see what going on with it.
Thanks in advance for any help

Have you done any work to the bike? Check your brake light switches (front brake switch mainly) for proper operation. A broken or stuck/sticking switch is the main culprit when it comes to CC issues.

Concur with DrPlastic. I'd completely check the set/resume switch (right side) and the associated wires. The speeding up mimics what would happen if you pushed that switch forward and held it. You've most likely got a switch/wiring issue. That it quit working altogether is a little ominous, but it could just be whatever the issue was progressed to its logical conclusion (whatever it is finally failed). (Hopefully, your cruise module is itself still ok). You haven't removed the right-hand controls lately, or replaced your bars, or done any wiring in the headlight nacelle...? When's the last time you washed the bike (or it got wet)? Any correlation to when this began, to that? Open up the right switch module (2 screws, one top, one bottom) and 'peel' the top back. Take a real good look.

If you suspect a switch, it might be easier to 'clip' the old switch out, and splice a new one in (than to 'fish' the replacement switch wires through). Put heat-shrink on the splice so you've got no bear wires...but I'm getting ahead of myself.

Before you do any replacing, visually inspect everything. If there isn't any obvious problem revealed by visual inspection, and if you aren't electronically savvy, I'd recommend you take it to your Indy or Dealer, and have them trouble-shoot it. If you are up to speed on electronics, with a copy of the Svc Manual (and asking directed questions here) you ought to be able to resolve the issue yourself.

For what it's worth, I've had problems (on my 05) with the set/resume switch. Symptom was: the red cruise light would come on, but the unit wouldn't set (the cruise didn't work). The first time, since the dealer installed it I took it to them and they replaced a switch (set/resume). A year or two later, the same thing happened again, and that time it turned out to be the module itself. Hopefully, it's not a module in your case, as the cruise kits at least are now obsolete, and the individual parts are getting hard to come by for non TBW (pre-08) cruise units...

There is a throttle initialization routine for the cruise control in the Service Manual. You just actuate switches in the right order and the crusie control will self-calibrate. GIve that a try....i can look up the codes, after I find my manual....
