I have a question regarding a 04' FLHT Electra Glide Standard which I picked up used with 2900 miles on it.
Having had numerous other bikes, this is my first Harley. That being said, I'm hooked on Harley's.
Here's my info:
Is it normal for a FLHT w/factory carb. to seem cold blooded. I am familiar with chokes from past vehicles but it seems I have to run the enricher (choke) about 1/2 open after warming up for about 5 minutes plus or if I stop at a red light/stop sign and I give the throttle, I can get a cough/pop and not a immediate engine acceleration response.
Note: This does subside after I've been running for a while and the engine is at a good operating temperature.
The previous owner obviously didn't ride much and I'm wondering if the fuel system needs a look (ie: spark plugs, carb. cleaning, ect.)
There is a link in HDForums called 'Stop The Pop' which sounds like what I'm talking about but I would like to know:
> Is what I'm explaining normal carb. operation or do I need to spend a little time on a cause?
> Do carb. bikes need to be warmed up longer than FI bikes and what's a good amount of time for warming it up?
My 06 FLH did a lot of spitting when cold out, I installed a Yost power tube, helped alot. Start up with enhancer full out, after about 30 seconds push half way in, in about a mile push it all the way in. Liked it so much I put one in my Fatboy and wifes sporster.
> liltrk, Thanks for the feedback. I will try that time frame you mentioned and look at 'Stop the Pop'.
> Bountyhunter, I would have gone with FI over carb., but I couldn't pass up the price I got this bike for. It gave me extra cash to add some personality to it.
> jyfb2000, What is a Yost Power Tube and where did you get it?
Most HD dealers carry the Yost Tube or you can order offline. Took me an hour including the trip back to the dealer for a bowl screw I stripped the head of.
