Default 92 Ultra w/ 85K miles

Hi guys. As if you couldn't tell, this is my first post here.

I have a Sporty now but am looking at a 92 ultra w/ 85K miles. The bike looks real clean and has had the topend redone. If the maintenance on the bike has been kept up, is 85K miles something to be scared of? Anything to look out for?

Thanks in advance.

Hey Bama,
I don't have any profound words of wisdom in regard to the Ultra, however, if it's possible I would want to take it to a wrench that I trusted and have it checked out. It's not unusual for a touring bike of that year to have some miles on it. With miles comes maintenance. If it runs good and the price is right, you can afford to have that maintenance done.
There are a lot of things to look out for ie. wheel bearings, shocks, motor mounts, steering head bearings, cam chain and gears, clutch, primary chain and gears, ect, ect... If the bikes in good shape or once it is, you'll wonder why you didn't trade up earlier, they sure are comfortable.
BTW, welcome to the forum...... Let us know how things turn out.

125k on my 95 Ultra. Still runs strong. I maintain very religously. I change fluids at 2,500k and am always looking at the bike to see if anything needs attention. Just found a front motor mount rubber deteriorated so a new one is one the way. Friend has a 97 RK with 170k and no problems. FWTW, neither of our bikes smoke or use oil. I did just replace my cam(Andrews EV23) and tappets (large axle rollers)last month. Keep your maintenance up and it will last you a long time. I don't dog mine or ride it extremely hard. THis isn't to say I do 35 all the time, it just means I don't ****** it around and speed shift or wind it until the upper end screams.

By all means take it to a trusted wrench. If he charges you and hundred and saves you from buying a bad bike, it's worth it. Course he could tell you to buy it right then and there. Just make sure he is a trusted wrench.

Unless its a killer deal I'd pass and keep looking. Great deals to be had on newer bikes. I would suggest 96 and up to have the modern gages and inner fairing.

Just my .02

I sold my 92 FXSTC in March 05 for $10k and it had 123 lbs compression in both cylinders and did not leak a drop. It ran perfect and was good to go. Have the bike checked out and if YOU like the bike, then forget what everyone in here says....this is all about what you like and what your preferences are. Your familiar with Harley's as you have the sporty. There is nothing wrong with an older bike if you are prepared to repair the what-if's. Don't let that scare ya....keep reading in here and all of our bikes have stuff going wrong with them from new bikes to old bikes. I like to formulate my own opinions and go from there. I'm sure that upgrading from a sportster to the Ultra is going to make you much more comfortable. There are a lot of nice asthetic improvments that have gone on through the years and you can make the decision on your own if what the 92 Ultra has to offer is what you like. You can always do like the rest of us and shop ebay and the net and modify the bike to suit your own tastes.

Good luck and post some pics when you get it.

Hey Bama, One more thing....when I sold my softail...it had 64000 miles on it. EVO's are strong engines when taken care of. Look for leaks and obvious buildup around the bottom of the engine and lower frame. If there is none...you are probably good to go.

Good luck.
