Cams
I'm thinking of changing cams in my 07 ultra what is everyone using? i for now want to cange the cams leaving everything else stock for now then building a 103 using same cams
Thanks
Thanks
One of the most important choices you'll make! Search, read and think!! I just changed my cam from the SE 257 to an HQ0034 has not been tuned yet and the change is amazing! I will go to a 103 when I do the timkin main bearing in the bottom and will most likely stay with this cam.
Your riding style will dictate the cam for you! The 257 was way to tall and came on way to late for me. This was a poor choice! I am partial to Head Quarters from all that I read on this forum but that is me there are plenty of options for you!

There are a lot of choices for just a cam swap.
It depends on how you ride.
2 up solo, tour, cruise, mid rpm's, high rpm's
I am using the SE 255 cams. I thought I would add the 103 later.
I now know I do not need it.
I tour and ride 2 up mostly or just cruise so I hardly ever need rpm's above 3,000

Remember that if someone says "I got a 10HP and 10TQ increase with the XYZ cams!," it doesn't tell you anything. If HP is increased you know it is at the top-end, but if TQ is up 10 at 4500 rpms but down at 2500 rpms and you spend most of your time at low RPM's, you will effectively realize a power loss where you ride most. Look at TQ numbers, but pay more attention to where the numbers peak. A dyno chart helps mostly if both a before and after curve is provided for comparison.
Here's my write-up on the install:

Definately check out Head-quarters.com and see what those guys have to offer. I have the 0034 cam in my bike, and am very happy with it. the HQ-500 is the same cam, just made for the 96" bikes, so would be the one you'd look at. Talk to Doug and let him know what you are trying to do, and he will give you a no nonsense answer about what you can do, and what you can expect from your investment.
Like these guys are saying, Head Quarters would be a good place to go. Also, Andrews has a 54H cam that was released in '08. Their site says it is designed for 96" or 103" motors and good for up to 10:1 compression. I have the 26H in mine now, and will be switching over to the 54H when I do my 103" build this fall.
I am going to suggest 2 diffrent ways for comparison: 1) I went with the HQ 575, knowing full well I was going to get a HQ 103 kit with 10.5:1 pistons. The cams by themselves were nice, not exactly a whole lot of punch I was anticipating on the 96. After going to the 103 kit, hold on.
2) You may want to find cams for YOUR 96 setup. A lot of diffrent factors from going from a 96 stock compression to a 103" cr of ?. Find the best cam for your set up now and if and when you decide to go for the 103 sell the old ones and get ones that will compliment you build.
Manufactures wise I like Woods, T-man, and of course HQ.
