All the 96's run very lean,HD downloads won't help, sooner or later you'll need the tuner, true duals hurt bottom end performance, this I know from my own experience, there are people here with much more knowledge then me that will tell you the same thing. The best thing that ever happened to me was finding an excellent Indy.

I'll tell ya, my BUB7 TD's made the difference between night and day when it comes to the heat. I thought I was gonna have 3rd degree burns on my right leg last summer, put on the TD's and super-tuner and cooled it right down

Do it right and get the SERT at the same time. You will be happy.

I have a slightly used fuelpak I could give a good deal on...........simple plug it in to stock harness and punch in the numbers from catalog to match your components...air cleaner, head pipes, mufflers. I ended up going with PCIII but the Fuelpak works good for the price.

Okay I understand what you are talking about "You are trying to get rid of the heat".

I put True Dual headers on and got rid of a lot of the heat on the right side. I highly recommend this is, if this is what you are trying to do. Which is what I was trying to do. I had to ride with my right foot on the highway peg just driving through town, because of the heat on the right side. Now I don't.

If you don't change the intake you should be fine. Yes it is better to do a Stage 1 and or Fuel management system, but you don't need to, just changing the exhaust.

+1....what I have read is that if your doing exhaust mods only that you don't need any fuel managament tuning unless your going to change out the stock ac also. most folks do both the exhaust and ac so hence the tuners. you should be fine with what your trying to do. just my .01

I appreciate all the info. I think I will go ahead with the true dual head pipes for now, just to get some heat off of my leg. I will get the PCIII or V later when I can afford it. I was just needing to know if I could ride with duals for awhile without hurting anything till I can get a fuel management?

The TTS Mastertuner would be the best as you wont need any dyno time with this unit. Synthetic oil will cool the motor

I did the true dual set-up without any management for about a month. The heat reduction was a definite plus, but I lost a noticeable amount of performance. Once I got the management system most of the performance was restored. I ended up ditching the trues for a two into one system, and now I couldn't be happier. After having four different systems I would never change them again without having the optimal tune. Have a great trip!

I think a tuner, which will allow you to fatten up your A/F ratio, will do more to reduce heat than an exhaust change. If you're working with a limited budget and want to reduce heat, I'd get a tuner first.

Also, you're going to get a dip in low-end torque between 2500 and 3000 rpm (right where we spend most of our time) with those true duals.
