Yes I'm waiting until the end of summer. It has been 35 years since I last drove a motorcycle. I want to make sure that I can handle the 900 before I move up to the ultra classic. If it was just me on the bike then it wouldn't be bad, but with a passenger I want to get lots of practise in before I move up. tks again
For me, the EGC was the best buy. Like stated earlier, the difference between the Ultra and the EGC is the ultra has fairing lowers, cruise control, cb/intercom, rear speakers and rear light bar on tourpack. Essentially, that's about it. I did not want lowers, cb/intercom or rear light bar. The cruise would have been nice but that can be added and probably will be added on my 06. Rear speakers would be nice, but the wife could really care less. Good luck with your purchase when it happens.

the 96 is still a hot running engine regardless what ever exhaust changes and plastic you put on it. he asked for peoples opinion so i gave him my honest opinion and you got to come along and try to make me out to be a liar.
I would never call people any kind of names on this site cuz it's not my position to say.
by the way if the 96 did not have a heat problem you would not see all the little gadgets and things to help the driver keep his core temperature down, yes they know there is a big heat problem with this motor and it would be better for them to just start with a whole new motor design before they burn all their future patrons.
This is why Harley designed Air Deflectors for all of the touring bikes. Now, The '09's got alot better with rear piston deactivation and re-routed the pipes to reduce heating problems. Really, I am not complaining about my bike cuz it's almost next to nothing comparing to my old '06 RKC.
I am very happy with my current bike. I've got confidence that this new design will please 90% of the new Touring owners where the other 10% may not be happy or agree with my statement regarding the heat situation. That is something I do not have control over. I'm very sure The Engineers at HD are watching every threads and posts on this site to improve designs every year to accomodate our riding/traveling needs.
All in all, Conversing on Internet by discussing/teaching one and another does everyone 'wonders' cuz 5 or 10 years ago...Improvements wouldn't be readily available for us, Touring Lovers.
My best advice would be to go to a dealer and do a test ride. I went from a Sporty 1200 Custom to a Heritage Softail and the Demo ride is what sold me. You'll fall in love with any of the three you have your sights on. The type of riding and kinds of trips you take will somewhat dictate which model is for you. My personal view is the Ultra Classic. Because it costs so much more down the road to add the whistles and bells onto a standard. And the price difference between a Classic and Ultra Classic is not that much considering all the accessories you get on the Ultra. I rhode a Classic for 2 years and 29,000 miles before getting my Ultra. Now I wouldn't own anything else. Just my 2 cents
Get the Ultra Classic. It may be a couple thousand more to begin with, but the extras a really nice. If you figure out you really don't want them, take them off and sell them and get most of the difference back I bet.
Also, I've not really noticed a heat problem with my Ultra or my RKC. Of course I can tell the motor is there and I can feel heat and it hasn't really been over 80, but I've ridden through town in stop-and-go traffic and really haven't had any/many issues at all. Personally, I don't think heat should be a factor for you, especially since you're in a relatively cold place.
I took the Government offered motorcycle course last September. It was 420.00 that was well spent. Tks again for all you replies and for allowing me into your forum.
Welcome. Good advice above. Investigate, but it you have the $$$$, go Ultra. It is highly unlikely that you'll be dissatisfied. To me, it's just the epitome of a motorcycle (my opinion, obviously), and I also ride a Gold Wing. As I've said many times, there are lots of bikes but only one motorcycle, Harley-Davidson.
I'd go with the Ultra Classic like I did. It had all the goodies I wanted and more.
They will all handle the same and are very reliable.
I know my dealer has a sign up that he cannot sell bikes to Canadians which is Harley's policy now. I think the Canadian dealers lost too much money in the past and the MOCO is helping them out.
For the difference in money I would go with the Ultra it's only around $2,000 more than the classic and it has the intercom that you and your wifw would like plus c/b,rear speakers,if you don't get one you will wish that you did later because it cost lots more to add those things .
