Time for me to take the plunge and start wrenching my own flhtpi
I have a friend with a shop who has been nice enough to do all my work so far, but I need to start doing my own scheduled service.
I can take any rice bike apart in my sleep, and even get it back together. I have no problem shimming my own valves for example, and for those of you who have never had the fun of doing 16 shim under bucket valves and synching 4 carbs plus bleeding the air out of the cooling system you have no idea of the fun you are missing.
But the V Twin.... with 3 holes to do ... never had the desire to give it a shot... until now.
My local NAPA has the oil filter, I have the service manual which I'll read at some point this week, got a T27 bit left from my days of working on Jeeps... got a 2L coke bottle to cut up to keep the voltage regulator and motor mount clean....
I'll take any advice you guys are willing to provide, any tricks, things to watch for, and suggestions for what to use in the engine, primary and transmission for oils.
I am a firm believer in synthetics, so I figure a Mobil1 for the engine.... can I use car spec oil or find the bike formula? Rice bikes with wet clutches can't use car oils because the additives cause the clutch to slip, but that isn't an issue in the engine oil on the EG, but does the heat generated by an air cooled V Twin bake the car oil into sludge?
Open for any and all suggestions.. thanks in advance
Some use "car" oil in the engine, but I agree with your statement that the heat generated by these engines could effect a "car" oil before a designed motorcycle oil as the additive packages are different. Cycle oils are designed a little heftier in the thermal resistance area. Be sure to use a cycle oil(wet clutch compatible) in the primary.
I used hd syn-3 on my first change in all 3 holes. this next change I'm going to use Mobil 1 v-twin 20-50 in the engine, hd syn-3 in the primary since I still have 6 qts left over and Mobil 1 75-140 lube in the tranny. will be doing this for both bikes next weekend.
Let me tell you it gave SUCK a whole new meaning.
I'll never complain about having to remove my exhaust on the rice bike to change the oil (5 minutes to R/R the mid pipe and can)
Neggy, what issues did you have?
I find it easy compared to lots of previous bikes I've had. My Road Glide and my current EGC, never had issues.
