Default Brake maintaince question

Hi All,
Well the dealer told me that the bike needed front brakes. I go and look at the pads and they are down to about an 1/8th inch. SO I buy a new set of pads and the service manual. I open the box on the new set and they are...1/8th thick, The thickness of the backing plate. So in double checking the old pads they are about 3/16th. So when do I change them in your opinians. It has 17000 miles on it and stops fine. When are you changing them?

I still have the original front brakes on mine with 37000 miles.
The pads are about 1/8-3/16" thick.
On my 3rd set of rear pads.I replaced the the 1st set of rear pads sooner than I had too.The second set had about .020" of mat'l at the thinest areas when replaced.
The pads should be replaced at about .040".

make sure to check all 4 pads on the front and both rear closely I gave mine a cursory glance one time, then when the front started making noise pulled them off 3 of the pads had plenty of material 1 of the inside was worn at a taper so it was all the way down to the backer.

If you haven't used one set of pads on the front in 37K, you aren't using enough of your front breaks. In fact, you should be replacing your front breaks more than your rears as they contain a majority of your stopping power and weight when stopping. JMO.

Note that there is a difference in brake pad thickness between the Harley brakes (through 2007) and the Brembos (2008 up). The Brembos start out really thin, while the H-D pads have a lot of friction material on them. Don't know why there is such a difference.
