If you're counting on the copper in the penny being softer than chrome you better look for a penny minted before 1982. If your Lincoln Memorial penny has a date before 1982, it is made of 95% copper. If the date is 1983 or later, it is made of 97.5% zinc and plated with a thin copper coating. Where else can you find this kind of valuable info??????
No it doesn't. 0000 steel wool is perfect for chrome. Dip the piece of steel wool in wax and it will remove all baked stuff with no scratches whatsoever.
Been using it for years, even on custom bikes. Oven cleaner works too but it destroys paint so it has to be used very carefully.
My bad. You'd think after all my years I would have learned "NOT" to believe everything I hear.
Did some reading on the net and 0000 is great for removing scratches on chrome. Duh!

The problem is that some (most) guys dont have the patience it takes.
You can rub right through chrome with 0000 wool even with wax and then the next question will be " I have a copper looking spot on my pipes, what is it?"
If its just a small spot, soak it with oven cleaner for a few minutes and then gently scrape the fibers with a penny
Unless anyone knows of a better way to remove surface rust from chrome.... Yeah yeah I know, once it rusts its going to always rust... but I am trying to slow it down.
not necessarily true in all cases.
rust is like a cancer, you can't just remove the visible surface rust, you have to kill it.
wash the parts with something that has phosphoric acid in it (like lime away or driveway cleaner, use gloves)..and soak it a bit..let in penetrate to where the rust is breeding...or if you don't want to mess with chemicals use vinegar...it will kill rust too, it just takes longer.
Then polish it back up with your favorite chrome polish
