I asked Dunlop that question and here is their response.
Thank you for taking the time to contact us regarding the proper inflationpressures for the Dunlop Elite 3 motorcycle tires fitted to your H-D UltraClassic. We suggest inflating your cold tires to 36 psi front and rear foraverage loads and 36 psi front and 40 psi rear for extra loads.
I go about 37/37 and have about 7200 miles on the stock tires for my 08 EGS. Looking at the tread depth it sure looks to me that I will get at another 7000 out of them and maybe more. I do ride conservatively meaning I don't do WOT starts. I check air pressure probably every other ride and keep it up to 37-38 psi.
i'm also thinking that they screwed the pooch on my last back tire. never noticed it before, last tire i had i got free installation, but today did the labor myself (cheap bastage ) and there was 9 (yep, nine) 1/4 oz weights taped by the valve stem. i took them all off today, put the dot by the valve stem (didn't have one on the front) and did not notice any bouncing on the test ride, got up to 80 and felt smooth as glass. i'm a happy camper...
Since you're doin' your own tires, get yourself a balancer (Marc Parnes makes a good one) & balance the bare wheel. Find the *real* heavy spot & mount the dots to that. Always takes less weights.
And, higher air pressure allows the tire to run cooler & gives it a longer life.
My rear is at 4/32 after 6000 miles. Going on a 2000 mile trip first of June. Was wondering how much it's worn over those 6000 and if I should replace before going.
Id say change it you still have a month of riding before june first. And heck for me thats 2000 plus miles anyway then another 2000mile trip id say if it looks warn down then plan to have it changed the week before you leave or cpl days then your on new tread for your trip and no worries.
36/40 psi on stock Dunlops and I change them out when they get between 2/32 & 3/32 left. Usually get 10,000 + out of rear and almost twice that out of front.
Metzeler's rep at Thunder Beach told me to run the max. pressure shown on the tire. Said I'll get better life out of the tire and it will run cooleer that way.
