Just a feeler if while deciding what type or which touring bike you wanted to buy if you looked at another make: like the Victory and the BMW. If so, what make of touring were you considering beside Harley Davidson.
I suppose it would be a Gold Wing if I had to go with something else. I need a bike that will log LOTS of miles reliably. My bike is my primary transportation year around so it's got to be reliable and comfortable. The RK I have now and the EGC I had before both served me very well and have been a joy to own and ride.
I have owned a 2006 Gold Wing. Before buying the Ultra Classic tried the BMW 1200LT,
and Victory Vision. All were nice. The Victory rode and handled the best, just butt ugly.
We all ended up here for a reason. Harley's simply have the soul, look, feel like no others. Not to mention the best people riding them and posting here. Sure, go look at the others, but then I hope you'll end up back here at home.
Great question. For me it would be a BMW - hands down. I was just at bike night here the other day and I was looking at some Gold Wings - and my God those are some ugly bikes! The dash it about a mile wide and just as deep, the controls look like those in an airplane, and there were three (yes - three!) sets of adjustable vents on each side of the bike. It looked more like a car that had the roof chopped off!
Beemers have a certain class to them - smooth, fast, hold their value almost as well as Harleys...that's the route I'd take.
Honda Gold Wing (Came real close to buying one new)
Owned and rode several Kawi Vulcan Cruisers / Nomads, considered a new Nomad then also considered the Kawasaki Vulcan Voyager (Didn't want to wait for them to become available and now hear they are made for short people anyway.)
If Kawasaki had come out with the voyager a couple years earlier I may have gotten one instead of my Ultra. I really like my Vulcan (I kept it) and there is a good Kawasaki dealer only 30 miles from my home.
When I was looking for a Touring bike I narrowed it down to the Goldwing or Ultra. Didn't care for the Yamaha. No BMW dealers near me at all, and only one Victory dealer that I know of.
