After getting my bike back from the recall stopped for gas in the middle of nowhere and when leaving the pump heard 4 pops out of the rear end sounding like the belt jumping a tooth get off to look at the rear and sea a thin piece of metal around the axle on the left side so I ride carefully home as the dealer is closed and jack up the bike and pull the axle and tink tink tink of the bearing ***** hitting the floor so sending the whole rear tire to the dealer and see if they will fix it with out the bike as I cannot get it to them, if any more stuff breaks on this bike I will have a brand new one soon. 08 egc only 13,000 miles and I have put only 3300 on it myself as it was a demo bike.
Are you going to have them replace all the bearings? If not, just take them the compensator sprocket. It's a five minute job with the right tools. Just make sure you follow the instructions in the service manual when it comes to re-installing and torquing the axle so you don't have another premature failure.
I think they had the belt way to tight it had a 10,000 mile service before I bought it so it should be under warranty and as dry as those bearings were it has been damaged for a while and a couple were split in half. I have the whole rear wheel I am sending in case the rubber isolators were damaged they look good but just in case.
I have the retrofit version of IDS on my 07 Ultra. After two bearing failures, we replaced the entire kit, and torqued the bolts to 80 lbs. Now have 20,000 miles on the new kit with no problems. Seems proper torque is the key.
That's one thing you got going for you. Your 08 came from the factory with the IDS so warranty will cover it. Not so with us 07 owners. They did give me a bearing at no charge. Would not replace the IDS. Paid labor to have the bearing pressed and IDS reinstalled. They thought it was just a freak thing and probably wouldn't happen again. I bought a spare bearing and carry it with me just in case.
IDS added to my '07 and less than 2000 miles later, bearings failed. Dealer stood behind their work though and replaced bearings free. After about 12,000 more miles the repair is still okay.
