...... So we start talking about buying one and the conversation leads to whether or not we should wait a year. Reason is we have one kid in college now and one starting this fall. As most of you may know it's not cheap so my cash at hand is committed and I will have to finance some of it.......
With *just one* in college this year (next year you'll have one as well, or two if the first one is still in!) now may be the time to buy if you can find a decent deal. You'll get to ride it this year, interest is low now, the 09's seem pretty well sorted out, next year all bikes get the current California emissions with catalytist (and I presume evaporative canister). I'll guess that HD will raise prices a little more than they have in the past.
Of course if you wait the 10's *may* get the 103" motor and you'll have a one model year newer bike. Or you can wait another year for the all new 2011 Road Glide with it's re-designed fairing and V4 liquid cooled motor?
I agree with cbears, the big changes are done on the touring models. Also, if you need financing, the interest rates today are the lowest they have been in many, many years. However, if you can go without for one more summer, wait for the 2010's as you will probably pay as much for a 'new' '09 as you will for a truly new 2010.
Thanks guys for the input, one thing I didn't mention, the dealer we rented from will apply my rental to the purchase AND they are giving $1k off of MSRP. Oops that is 2 things.
My wife and I did the same thing a few years ago - within a month I bought my Ultra.
I got a new 07 when the 08's just came out. Saved $1000 off the top.
But - I had a year old bike when I got it. Something to consider.
Also - if you hang on all the latest and greatest hype you'll never be happy.
I bought mine and never looked back - I'll be keeping her for a while too.
As far as your question on whether to buy or not - you're already close to buying just by asking the question.
You may want to wait until you find out the real cost of that college education. While the thought of a new ride is exciting nothing will be more dissapointing to you if your kids can't attend school because you have money going elsewhere for discretionary expenses. Just my .02 worth.
I guess I should have worded my first post better, I have the cash for the school expenses so I won't be dipping into that. BUT that is why I have to finance, and as some people have brought up the interest rates are low. Add that to the price maybe going up 5% and it may make sense to buy now (less interest paid since the rate is lower and the MSRP is less).
The longer you wait , the less you ride. I don't think the changes will be significant since they made the changes on the 09's, maybe some color changes. I would go for it, you know you want to!
