Default Heat Manglement

May 8th in South Florida and HOT. And it's not even summer yet. Wait till it REALLY gets hot.

So I was creeping in the bank drive thru lane for about 15 minutes and felt her go into at least Phase 1 heat management. First time in the 500 miles I've had her.

It might have even dipped into Phase 2 and I have no idea now to tell if it went into Phase 3 (richen mixture...). It did not (seem to) go into Phase 4.

Okay - it's supposed to do that.

But I did not like that the next two times after brief low-speed rolls and idling up to a stop - it stalled. Started right back up - no "kick back".

Fine after the run back home on more or less open roads.

Guess I'll wait for the 1,000 miler and have the high end synthetics put in - and maybe complain about the injectors (I have the 8 degree). Maybe even do the oil cooler JUST to increase the oil volume.

I gotta think the stalling right after heat management ain't right much less safe.

Pisson the EPA.

Thanks for listening,

Pete

ptoemmes,
I wouldn't get too worked up yet. A lot of things go out of whack in the first 1,000 miles as the engine and components get seated in. Should smooth out after the service interval (if your wrench is good at what he does). My bike went into heat management several times North of San Diego three weeks ago during a gawdawful two-hour back up on I-15. It was weird while it lasted, but once I got going, the motor seemed to work OK with no stalls, etc. I've got 25,000 on mine. A lot of people out here who live in the desert get oil coolers. May be a good investment in Fla., too.

I am told that if the front cylinder head temp gets too hot, the bike ignition will shutdown and not allow you to even start the bike until a safe operating temp is reached. I don't think the service manual states this, but that is what I have been told.

I've experienced the 2nd to 3rd stages of the management in stop and go traffic at Sturgis last year, and while stuck in at traffic jam on Lake Shore Drive. If you anticipate being in traffic for some time, try to find a SAFE place to pull off the road and go grab a cold beverage or take a siesta.

I know how you feel, though. I still worry when I feel that engine start to miss in HOT weather...

RBJ,just curious, how long did your bike idle or was it just "stop and move a foot"before the heat mgr. kicked in?

2 things came to mind...

1. Its a brand new really tight motor and will loosen up and cool down a bit with time
2. 8* injectors... I just got my 25's and wow, its soooooooooo much cooler. Dealer did a download as well, so I'm not sure which actually caused the cooling. I'm all stock still motor/pipes.

Thanks everyone (so far).

1. I agree worked as advertised

2. If you find yourself in stop-n-go or stopped for a long time - get away. In my case I could of parked her and walked inside the bank.

3. Mileage (mostly local in town) has goe from 25 first tank to just over 35 so she is loosign up

4. Will chat about injectors with the stealer at the 1,000 mile mark.

5. I will probably do the oil cooler if just for the increased oil volume. I know - no movement no cooling (or not much)

Pete

Just had my real first experience with the heath management. I have felt the drops in RPM before but tonight I was stuck in stop and go go traffic, mid 70's weather and it finally got down to stage 3 i guess where it idles at +/- 700 RPM and the pulses aternate, man what an awful feeling not knowing if this thing is going to puke on you any second. the heat off the motor wa unreal. That is by far my biggest dissapointment on the bike so far. Had I know this before , i for sure would have gone the carb route.

If you had gone the carb route wouldn't the bike just go into meltdown? Think I'll deal with the wierd idle etc etc and know that at least the bike is trying to stay cool...
