Default Vance and Hines Basics baffle

Has anyone unwrapped their baffles on the V&H Basics? I was thinking of making things a bit more aggressive without completely removing the baffle. Does anyone have any advice about how this might affect the stage 1 AC and download?

Geez, my basics are louder than a thrash metal concert. I dont even start the thing without my plugs in. Maybe I am getting soft in my old age.

The basics on my bike dont have a baffle at all, you can look straight thru them like a telescope. I would expect yours are the same. They have sound absorbing material around the perimeter but no baffle.

I had no mufflers at all on my 09 when she was a 96 and she ran fine. I doubt pulling the perimeter packing will affect your stage 1 at all.

Mine are 2" straight through front to back, but there is sound packing material around the pipe inside the can, so maybe V&H calls that a baffle (more like a simple muffler). They're loud, for sure. Are the baffles even removable on those - from where, the front? Mine looked welded at the rear.

Mine have 2 allen screws on the underside, I was thinking they are getting loud and was thinking about rewraping mine but was conserned about destroying them trying to remove the baffles, mine are a few years old and probably have some rust or carbon buildup in them, post how difficult it was, I will be interested how it works for you

I'm running the V&H Basic Slash Cut mufflers (#16725) along with the True Duals on my '05 RKC and have been since 7/05 when I bought the bike...first upgrade I did. Recently I just finished rebuilding the bike from the ground up due to an accident last year and I went back to the same exhaust setup.

The baffles are removable and are more than just a straight through opening. Yes, you can look through the center of the baffles but the inner section is also fluted to "deaden" the sound along with the fiberglass-type wrapping they use. Because I like the sound so much from the old mufflers I removed the baffles from the new mufflers and replaced them with the old baffles. Over time the wrapping will start to deteriorate which allows the fluted sections to be the primary muffling effect; hence a louder tone. I am also running a Stage 1 ECM and complete setup. I would strongly suggest not removing the baffles completely since a certain amount of back pressure is required. The roughly 4" opening of the muffler itself provides very little of that on it's own. Based on my experience (yeah, I tried it) the bike ran like crap without the baffles installed. After removing the two allen head bolts at the rear the baffle assembly should slide out...in theory. One thing that may help if they are being difficult to pull out is to use some PB Blaster and spray a bit around the rear of the baffle where it makes contact to the muffler housing. Another thing that might be required is some sort of a hooked tool that you can use to grab hold of the baffle to give you more leverage for pulling it out.

Just my .02 worth. Hope it helps.

Brian

You can unwrap the baffle material from the muffler core. I would not advise it as it does not sound very good. You will not gain much more loudness, and will loose a portion of the back pressure created by the packing.
I did the opposite in mine, I added material to the wrap, it added a deeper tone and cut off some of that raspy sound.

Federij,

What type of material did you add to the exiting wrapping?

Thanks for the feedback. I just had the exhaust put on my 09 RK along with the stage 1. I guess i was expecting it to be a bit louder, but it does sound nice. Its probably because its my first bike where the exhaust comes out in the back rather than the side.

buddy of mine put on the VH slip ons. took out the packing. not loud enough. took out the baffles. OH CRAP!!!!! man that is loud. it runs fine and keeps up with my 09 no prob. How loud you want? take it all out or leave some in it is up to you. length of your pipes adds back pressure. longer without baffles is better short and nothing is not as good. look at VH web site they break it down very well.
