I am looking at an FLHP. The bike is an '07 (103ci) with 1200 miles. The salesman said it was a demo bike, but is being sold with a lot of returned, leased patrol bikes. So I am not sure what he means by it being a demo. They are asking $15500. I am not sure whether this is a good price since info on the FLHP is hard to find. Additionally, they are trying to tack on an additional $1100 in various fees. I thought additional fees were only part of a new bike purchase. I guess my main question is whether or not the asking price is fair, and whether I should just flat refuse the pay the extra fees on a lease return bike?
If it has 1200 miles, it has seen police service (probably on lease) and you can bet those miles were tough. The price is pretty high.
www.FLHPI.com is a great forum for police Harley-Davidson info.
I have a 2007 FLHTPI for sale (see classified section on this forum) that I purchased new (has never seen police duty) in mint condition for 13.9. Also now on Ebay ... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Harle...1%7C240%3A1318
Sorry for the plug, but wanted to give you some perspective.
Hard miles? Good lord...talk about the sales pitch. Anyways...I bought my 07 FLHP in Feb 2008. $15,499.00 out the door. Remainder of warranty intact. Bike has been absolutely a flawless performer. Mine had 2k miles on it and was a return from the local PD. I could not be happier. As a lease bike, they had the usual periodic maintenance at the shop. Having said that, I think that you should tell them to take all the accessories and put 'em back on the shelf...unless you want them. Is $15.5 a bad price? Probably not but you probably could find a better price if you are willing to look and travel. I am a fan of the Police bikes. The 103 runs great and has not missed a beat. In fact, it runs so well out of the box that I am not in much of a hurry to get into the engine. I bought Andrews 54 cams....that are still in the box. If you buy one, I doubt that you will be disappointed. As for buying lease return bike from local shop? My bike was a local bike so its history was known. Some shops buy bikes from PD's out of state. As an example, the local shop did purchase 10 or 12 bikes from Chicago PD last year. The blew them out the door at 12k. These were 2006's with 88 inch motor. I don't know that I would have bought one of those. What you want it is the 103 inch motor. Which dictates a 2007 or newer. Also, buying from a private party is just as big a crap shoot. I have plenty of friends who are rather hard on their bikes. Would I want to buy their bike? Nope. The only way you get an unmolested bike...buy a new one. Otherwise...they are all used.
I have no complaints about mine. In fact...after I pay the cars off....I hope to pick up a 2010 Police bike. Most likely an Electra glide. Will I get rid of the 07? Only if I have to. And right now....I doubt that will happen. Take one for a ride if you can. I doubt you will be disappointed. Then you can decide if the 15.5 is too much.

Thanks for the feedback. 1200 miles doesn't seem like much to me. This particular bike does have the 103ci engine. According to the salesman, all of these returns are from either Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach police departments. Nada guides says that the average retail on an '07 Road King (standard) is $14600 (or there abouts) so I figure the bigger enginer is worth the difference. Or maybe not? I have ridden Kings before, but not the police model.
The extra fees aren't from add-ons, but things like "dealer fee", "set up/restoration", "doc fees", and "tags". I am going to just refuse to pay these fees. I am not in a hurry to buy a bike. I would like to have one of these, but was actually looking at a Dyna. If I have to walk away from these police bikes I can. I won't like it, but I will.
Seems like a very high price for the Road King version. Last fall a friend of mine purchased a Police 07 ECS and had SuperTrapp SE Exhaust, short smoke windshield, detachable backrest, Road Glide seat and new skull grips. Still had time left on the warranty too. He got all of it for around $15k. He loves it. I'm guessing those extra fees are the new tires the bikes has to get, seat, taking off all the police stuff, lights, siren, racks stuff like that. I guess I thought that was just what the HD dealer had to due to sell the bike due to those things not being DOT legal? Guess your dealer is passing that cost along to you?
I have driven it too and I must say I find that 103 pretty nice! A noticeable difference from my 08 EGC engine.
A local indy shop in my area gets a supply of police bikes every year.
I have never seen one with that high a price tag...but then again, they have not gotten in any low miles 07's with the 103 either.
Typically they would be an 05 or 06 with 10K-25k miles and asking $12,000- $13,500 for them.
If you can get them to waive the fees and knock the price down a bit... go for it.
http://www.northshoreharley.com/. call these guys. i was by there on Monday coming back from new orleans and they have quite a few blue cop bikes. they are always priced well below other dealers. their site has a 2007 FLHP for $10500.
I have 2 cop bikes and love them %100 bought an 07 from a private party 607 miles,103 ci,6 speed,SE slip ons,Stage 1 download,SE AC,nice seat with a removeable back rest.
Paid $ 14,500 The 103 with the 6 speed is sure nice..
I can't say anything bad about my 06 FLHPI. But the price you are looking at does seem on the high side. It wouldn't hurt you to check around and compare other shops. Whichever you end with, enjoy!
I was doing more research online about purchasing an FLHP. I found what appears to be an " Award Spec" for police bikes for this year bike from the exact dealership I am talking to. If this thing is accurate the mark up is huge. Check it out.
