Bought my bike with 15 grand on it. Now has 33 There has always been a chirp in the left exhaust. i thought the cross over may have had a peice of weld sticking up causing it as it would not do it when under load. I put new V&H duals on and it is still there. Took pipe of and still have the chirp at idle. Is this a harley chirp I have noticed others once in a while that have it going on. Bike runs great and doesn't seem to be getting worse. I did have a compensator nut loosen up last week. That was a scary thought. I was sur ethe bottom end had went.
Check the exhaust manifold bolts or fairing brackets if it's chirping at idle. Usually it is the muffler hangers or a belt, but if it's chirping at idle you have seem to have something rubbing metal to metal somewhere on the bike.
The chirp I had was comming from the rear of the exhaust hanger underneith my rear fender. It was rubbing the inside of the fender. One of those little sticky green pad thingies took care of it. Also the rubber bushing part of the rear exhaust hanger is often the culprit as well. I also had that chirp and a little graphite took care of it.
We have tried spraying and prying on everything. Nothing seems to change the pitch. I put shims in the back muffler brackets because they started rattling some. Fixed that problem but still have the chirp. I have had the exhaust off 4 or 5 times changing things and it has never changed tone then niether. It is one of those very annoying noises that don't seem to harm anything except for my coscious.
What kind of noise did you get when your compensator came loose?
I get an occaisional squeal or long chirp and haven't been able to pin it down yet.
Thanks!
Thought main bearings or rod bearing. knocking noise low tone. When I shut the bike off it was really weird sounding. Like the whole bottom end was coming loose.
less than a turn loose to. At least before I torqued it, which made another turn or more. 165#
I had a chirp once, it was the rear head gasket. It eventually started to spit oil. Just depends where it is blown. I noticed where it was after I washed it & went to pull it into the garage, saw something by my left leg, it was water from when I washed it. May pray it where the head meets the cylinder. Good luck.
