The 09 is a true 2-1-2 system, but with the cat installed it is very restrictive. The cat is directly after the 2-1 connection, there is no space for a collector so the 2 flows can scavenge so it makes it hard to get good flow. also, the cat is a honeycomb with small passages that really slow up the flow.

The 09s without the cat use the cat space as a collector, promoting better savenge, but still not as good as a proper 2-1 or 2-1-2 collector.

I have an 08 RG with the 2:1 thunderheader. Part of the selling point of the 09 is the cross "under" exhaust to get the heat away from Man Parts. If you don't want loud then the Thunderheader is not for you, but 2:1 sound and performance is nice in my opinion. Get what YOU like and ride it like you stole it.
