Looking at an '06 Street Glide. Will the cost of ownership on my first HD be significantly more than my Jap bikes? Always hear horror stories bout HD with maintenance and repair costs.
Don't let it scare you...buy a manual and do your own maintenance if you are not afraid of wrenching a bit...Ask advice on the forum when you want...It depends on how smart you shop but you can spend as much money on a Jap bike....
Nothing wrong with either, but the cost of ownership for a HD has to be lower as when you look at a stock bike resale value, they tend to hold it better.
The hard part comes when you look at the accessory catalog, that is where the cost of ownership goes thru the roof....but the enjoyment factor is there as well
Cost of ownership will be significantly more as a member of this forum. There are too many tricked out bikes with all of the latest and greatest toys that will keep you salivating for years to come.

+1 on this remark! No crotch rocket will have the resale our bikes do! Maintenance is rarely an issue...but like any other product...some bikes might need more than others...happens with crotch rockets too1
Now...Mods on you bike adds a new dimension to cost factors! Once you see all the options out there...you'll be amazed, awed, and a few dollars shorter! LOL
Just to clean something up, I don't ride rockets. Rite now I have a VTX 1300C and enjoy the **** out of it. I really want to turn it in to a full bagger with fairing, but don't want to see my money ride off into the sunset if I have to sell one day. The Glide I'm looking at has everything already on it and it and the stuff increases the price of the bike.
Have a good friend who is a wrencher for and independent dealer and he says they work on HD more than any other bike. So obviously I'm a little spooked.
iceman...There is no such thing as a bike with everything on it...OMG...it's a HARLEY...there's always something more to put on it! ALWAYS...LOL
Even if ya don't ride a crotch rocket...it's still a japanese bike and they do not have the resale that our bikes have. So...whether your friend is right or not...we still have japanese bikes on resale...Says alot about the REAL quality of a bike. And it's not even the Harley name that make it that way...it's quality....it's prestige...it's just the way it is...no matter how ya chalk it up.
Why are Harley's worked on more? Cause usually people do more to their Harley. Even if it's maintenance issues...you'll find the average Harley rider more concerned with their bikes than others. You buy a bike for 20-25K....you take care of it...you try and baby it! I've had experience with Japanese, German (Austrian), british and American bikes...I'll take My Harley Hands down on all of them for the sheer pleasure I get!
Of course, this is JMHO and not necessarily the views of the management!
What a great reply! Help me out on price a little. They are asking 16500 for an '06 with 26k. Got a paint job with flames but think it is stock. They also priced a '08 Electra standard with 1,400 miles (yes the comma is in the right place) for the same. It already has all the stuff a classic has, except the trunk and is EFI where the SG is carbed. Any thoughts?
