For you LEO's out there, I'm curious about the bikes I see riding on the shoulder to get around stopped traffic when it's hot. Is that legal? I've never seen anyone stopped. Do most LEO's look the other way when this happens? Just curious since Summer's around the corner.
When I was a cop in NC I'd issue citation "passing on the right". Very dangerous riding on the shoulder. For splitting up the middle of stopped traffic got you "Careless and wreckless" citation. But all cops are different some turn a blind eye, while others will smoke ya. Remember it's all legal until you get caught.
I am retired now but that is illegal. The truthful part is that if traffic is back up most officer's are busy with the traffic issue. That would reduce the odds of the person getting stopped and ticketed. But I wouldn't bet on it!
It's illegal here and will get you a ticket. Worse than that, the shoulders have lots of debris, and it's the best way I know of to get a flat tire from a puncture from that debris. Might save you a little time when traffic backs up, but not worth it when you have to replace tires every week or so.
It is illegal in Connecticut. 14-236 passing on right. And as far as turning a blind eye, there is no way to know what other situations the Officer might be involved in. And remember what goes around comes around. If I do not get you this time, I will the next. ride safe.
Do not do this at the Hampton Roads Bridge tunnel on 64 in VA. I can tell you with 100% certainty the troopers will write you up. No, I did not get the ticket, two friends did. Recently a VSP motorcycle trooper hit a car parked on the shoulder trying to pass to get to an accident.
Got a ticket passing on the left emergency lane, cop said everyone was stopped, funny thing was that while he was writing the ticket a Fire Truck had to merge back into traffic to get around us.
Retired NYPD HWY Patrol says yes, illegal here and dangerous/// have seen cagers do it and when the cop see's them the pull back into traffic and make believe their invisable. and yes there is a lot of debris on that shoulder so the odds are greater for tire failure
