I have owned sportsters for years, but now I have the chance to buy a 2005 ultra classic with 30k miles. Its been dropped and has some road rash on the fairing, and engine guard. Also a broken light and the passenger seat and side bag is damaged. It is from out of state and am told it is not a salvage title. I would like some input from some of you on things to look for. I think he got an insurance claim but that doesn't mean its a salvage right? He also has a new rear tire and mag rim for it. He had a blowout which caused the accident and ruined the tire. Its from the original owner and looks like its in real nice shape other than what I explained. Thanks for any input from you all.
How much? I would be worried about hidden damage, like maybe slightly bent forks or frame. I am no expert with damaged bikes or insurance but if the insurance company paid him for a totaled bike, that means the title will become a salvage title.
If the damage was truly caused by the blow out then ask to see the insurance claim. You will see exactly what he got paid...it will also prove that the bike did not get totalled out. Price of the bike should be true market value minus the payout.
Another thought...if the bike was fixable and the insurance paid the claim...then why didn't he get it fixed?
I would probably steer clear of a wrecked bike. If you're wanting to step up from the Sportster there are plenty of nice scoots out there for decent money I am sure. Keep looking and let us know what you decide. You won't be disappointed going with an Ultra. You'll wonder why you waited so long. Good Luck!
I think its a real good deal. He told me $7500. I'll ask him about the insurance papers (good idea). I was also wondering if anyone has pics of one without all the bags. And this is great getting all this information, I'd like as much info about this as possible. Is there a way to check forks?
The road rash doesn't look bad pretty much just scrapes.
There is not way to tell just looking at it if the frame or forrks are damaged unless it really bad. BUT, I've seen some prety messed up bikes that did not suffer damaged to either. Fork damage is usually caused by running into something. by what you described he probably low sidded the bike when the tire blew. Makes me wonder what else has been neglected as he let the tire run long enough to blow out.
1st make sure it is fuel injected, wouldnt buy a carb model. after that you have a minimum of $2K in parts and paint, plus pickup or del $. if you can buy it for $10k or less maybe a deal
