Yea like everybody else said now would be a good time to just switch to gear drive cams and the job is not that hard just follow the manual....as far as the adjustable push rods that is the easest way to do it or you have to open up the top of the motor and loosen then rocker arms to get the push rods out and then back in.
what are the hq 0034 cams like? trying to decide on cams for my 08 sg. the tw 21 and tw 26 are of interest to me. as are the woods.
For your 08 the equivalent to the HQ-0034 is the HQ-500. I have the0034 in my bike based on some sage advice from the fellows on this forum, and i'm happy with it. I'll probably be even more happy with it once i convince myself i'm not doing any more motor work for a while and get my bike in for a good dyno tune!
C'mon folks. Eleven responses and no one has answered the OP's specific question.
Good catch Scrooge.......
Now to answer your question No you have to remove the gears and chain before you remove the plate....and as far as getting the tensioners installed you can do it real easy......you should not have to take that to the dealer.....
1. Get a new set of adjustable Push rods & cut the old one's out to save a lot of time.
True, but the pushrods are at least $125. Removing the rocker covers and plates is a hassle, true enough, but not that bad. It just takes patience and an extra couple of hours total.
2. get new inner & outer cam bearings.
...and buy a pair of Timkins to replace the stock inner INA bearings, only about $10. Not sure if Timkins are available for outers, as my TC96 uses native-metal bearings.
3. If you have not changed your cams now is the time to do it, while everything is apart.
Good advice.
I used Georges garage for my cam tentioner removal.
My dealer just install SE Kit #25284-08 at their labor rate of 82.50 the bill
came to 1001.46. I do not have the expertiese nor the tools for this kind
of work. Too much maybe, convient yes. Bill shows 5 hours of labor. For once
I feel this was the best thing I have ever done to the bike and that my friend
makes the cost ok. Your extra hour may be for putting in adjustable push rods.
don't know just a thought.
Here is where I get my Andrews: Parts
Can get the complete gear package w/cams for 6bills.
I wouldn't use the stock pushrods myself but it will work, if ya get topend noise adjustables would allow better fitment. Can get really nice ones on the cheap here: Pushrods They are tapered and use the best moly tubing.
Thanks blkfalc4...appreciate it. Will these work with the stock push rod covers?
Was cooking out tonight with the wife and she told me to go with whatever gets the bike done faster. That means the adjustable pushrods go in. Amazing what an 80 degree day, grilling on the barbey and a few beers will get you. LOL
Yes, they fit with everything, Covers, rockerboxes, lifters etc.
You won't have to pull the rockerboxes with the adjustables, just cut the stockers with boltcutters. Don't saw them though. Of course you can still remove the boxes if ya so inclined to save the stock pushrods.
