Going to change my cam chain tensioners on my 05 EGC. Talked to dealer and they wanted 6 hrs labor to do the job. I am not going to pay that kind of money so I will do most of it myself.
Everything in the manual seems straight forward. Book says to pull the sprockets and then the plate. Can I pull the plate with sprockets and chain in place? I was wanting to do it that way because I will then take it to the dealer and have them change the tensioners and do an overall check of cranks and bearings.
Just changed my tentioners on my 05 Ultra a few weeks ago.
1. Get a new set of adjustable Push rods & cut the old one's out to save a lot of time.
2. get new inner & outer cam bearings.
3. If you have not changed your cams now is the time to do it, while everything is apart.
I used Georges garage for my cam tentioner removal.
I had a set up to remove the inner cam bearings & used an old set of cams to push the new inner cam bearing back in.
Only the front cam have to be pressed, so I used an arbor press.
I also removed the oil pump & inspected the unit & It showed no sign of wear so I put her back in.
After I put everything back together with the new bearings & tentioners I installed the lifters & adjustable push rods & WALA, The job was done. 4 hrs total.
I put the job off for a few weeks until al of my parts came in (gaskets, bearings, tentioners) I allready had the adjustable push rods so I didn't have to buy them.
I also install andews 26 cams. We ride two up daily & the new cams made a great differance compared to the stock H-D Cams. The outer tentioner had only a small bit of wear but the inner one was 1/2 way down. we had 60,000 miles on the bike when I did the job. I did alot of other things to the bike while I had her apart BUT the cams & tentioners were a simple thing that anyone that has any machanical ability can acomplish. Evens if it took you a week end to do the job its cheeper then H-D.
As was already mentioned, if you're moderately mechanically inclined, have, and can read the SVC manual.... it's quite simple.
Heck, for what the stealer would charge for new tensioners, you could probably install a set of Head-Quarters HQ-0034 cams and end up with a much better running scoot as well ~ all for close to what you'd have paid for the new tensioners.
I believe tensioners are for chain driven cams, not gears. And '95 would be chain driven cams. The upgrade would be to replace the spring type tensioners with hydraulic type or do away with chains and tensioners all together and convert to gear driven cams. Noisier but more accurate, longer lasting, much less friction and HP robbing drag.
I have a 1995 E G Standard. Do I have gear or chain cam tensioners and if I have gear as opposed to chain should I be concerned about failure. Thanks
Your EVO has a single gear driven cam. Only problems that come up are the inner bearing sometimes goes south. It's a very simple job replacing those if you have an internal puller.
freeze overnite all the bearings and cams. when ready to install heat the cam support plate to 200 degress in oven. all parts will almost fall together using a rubber or brass hammer not a press.
