Default Fuel octane additive ??

When traveling and you can't find 91 octane fuel, what octane additive actually works and is recommended for the 1540 engine?

Harley sells a fuel additive for exactly this purpose.

Not sure how well it performs, but I hear it works well as a paint stripper.

I never found an octane booster that did anything except waste money and foul the plugs. But if keep compression below ten to one I have been able to run 87 w/o any significant problem that a little more fuel would not solve.

Acetone is not an octane booster, it's a solvent. At best it will clean your injectors, at worst it's highly corrosive. Use what the pros use - toluene or xylene in 10% concentration will raise your octane from about 91 to 94. Don't wast your money on store-bought octane boosters, when they say they raise your octane by "several points", they mean from 91 to 91.4.

Toluene or xylene cost less than 1/2 as much as LUCAS NHRA OCTANE BOOSTER. And they are easily carried in MSR 33 oz fuel bottles that you can buy at any camping store. YES I AM A CHEMIST!
