I have decided that my stock air shocks on my ultra - have got to go!
I have looked at 440 progressives for around $600...
I have looked the Ohlins and Penske shocks from Motorcycle metal for around $1,000...
At motorcycle metal they pre-set the ohlins or penske shocks for the type of riding you do....1 up, 2 up, bags full....etc! Because I raced motorcross for years I understand the importance of setting the height, pre-loads, and springs correctly.
But really - we have touring bikes - and for those who have bought the $1000 shocks - ARE THEY WORTH IT?
I have read alot of stuff on the board here, especially a write up by Chicago-Spike about the penske shocks.
But really are the $1,000 shocks worth the extra money?
If i know i am going to spend $600...spending 400 more, is ok....so folks - please help me decide!
Had the 440s loved them, a great step above factory. broke one since I had bought them used no warrenty so I decided to try works from thier outlet store. if you dont see what you need email them http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Works-Performance-Products again a good step above the progressives. I cant imagine how much better the penski's or the olins would be above stock
The Ohlins that Howard is working on may also prove to be very good or great. The price makes them more attractive. However, if they are not very good to great, then to lower price may actually not be worth while.
From my experience, the Penskes are the best I've seen ~ they are "built to order" & worth the $$ IMO.
Phil, have you tried lookin into Works? Ive heard great things about them. You call them up, tell them what you do, and theyll set you up. Ive thought about them, but $$$ doesnt grow on trees for this particular guy. Hope Ive helped.
Just went threw this. What I decided was I'm not gonna really feel THAT much difference on the road but will in my pocket. Very few guys complained about the Progressives so thats what I got. BIG difference! My bride noticed it right away. And thats what really mattered.
Don't need to pay $600 either. I got mine here: https://www.phatperformanceparts.com...de=WP-SHOCKS-F

No, I haven't. They may be great too.
With my Penske's in place, I'm not need'n to to be shock shop'n.
hey thanks.....this is all good....i did forget about works.
My problem for me is still the same....spend 500-600 and get OK
spend $400 and get great...
Phil - what is the biggest differance - ride quality....smoother more comfortable ride, or ride handling with more stability and control...I am sure both....just courious though your opinon on what is most differant over the 440's.
PS - sounds like you have read the book "good to great".........
I'm sure you won't be disappointed with the Ohlins. I've had them on several bikes and the results have always been excellent. Will be getting a set for my RK once I put a few more miles on it.
