Default Advice for NC mountains trip

Don't want to drag along too much clothing. Will leathers be enough to keep us warm? Will be heading to Ashville the first week in June. Coming from Missouri thru Tn. Will be hot coming thru Mo. and W. Tn. Not too cracked about wearing the chaps but I will if y'all who have 'been there and done that' think they will be necessary once we get there. How about the evenings? Need a sweatshirt? Wife is needing to know. She'll bring enough stuff the way it is. T-Bag will only hold so much.

Rain gear and a heavy long sleeve shirt is all the extra I carry on that route, that time of year.

I don't use chaps anymore and stay warmer with thin longjohn bottoms and jeans. Doubtful you'd need any of that in June around this region.

I'd say yes. I just returned from 3 days there out of a 9-day ride. Did one day on Skyline Drive and 2 days on the BRP and never even wore my chaps, although I had them with me. Last year in July I had to pull out a light jacket for an early morning start in the Smokies near Cherokee, NC. So, jeans plus chaps should do the job. I was fine without them two weeks ago and I don't have lowers on my bike. Hope this helps.

I should have been more specific... never ride anywhere, anytime without your leather jacket along.

After years of touring I've learned to carry full-winter attire with me on all bike trips regardless of the season. That includes leather jacket, heated liner, one pair of heated and three of non-heated gloves (sunscreen, light, and medium), and full rain gear (jacket, pants, gaitors, and face shield for my 3/4 helmet). Since installing lowers I don't carry the chaps any longer, as the rain pants help keep the wind off if needed.

We just got back from a week-long ride in NC, VA, WV, KY, etc. and one day near Maggie Valley on the Parkway it started raining and the temp plunged to 45°. What's more we were riding in the low clouds and fog and often couldn't see 20' in front of us. Also, in Elkins, WV it was 38° when we started out. So, I would be prepared for anything in that area, even in June or July.

Rule of thumb, that's probably the best advice...

we've been in a warm, very dry pattern here for 3 years, and with rain moving in a northerly direction for 3 weeks now I figure we're in for a wet season.

ran into a couple in '06 who just made a x-country ride. The girl had sunburn, to the point of blisters, on one side of her nose, and the other side had frostbite damage. I'd be willing to wager she didn't look like the same person after getting all that healed...
