New to forum, recently purchased 05 used ultra. suspecting valve seal problem. Using qt+/1000mi. Dealer to fix under warranty. Decided to have 1550 upgrade done. All necessary gaskets, fluids, parts which include SE pist, SE257 cam kit, SE A/C kit, EFI race tuner kit, quik install pushrods. $1550.00. 13hr labor which 5 were deducted for valve seal issue. total labor $600.00. Heads reworked by "best guy around" $900.00. To me, parts seem to be in line, head work, I have no clue. But labor hrs I feel I'm getting banged a bit. Any imput/advice in reguards to my concerns and parts being used is much appreciated. Thanks!
I'm not sure what your doing posting this now - don't you think it would have been wiser to get a qoute before the work was done? You have no recourse but to pay it now - so why sweat something you can't do anything about - just pay it Dude and chaulk it up on the lesson learned side... good luck...
Well.......the cam choice was different, usually the shops push a 203 or 204, make sure that you know the torque profile for the cam you want based on your riding style and whether you ride 2-up or solo. The labor is about right, but will vary some. The heads are another story, call BigBoyz, they are a sponsor on this site, they do heads for 300$ and do a damn fine job to. They will give you some very good info on Whatever build you want to do. I would not pull the trigger on the work until I had some more info.
Mitt, guess I didn't make myself clear in writing my post. Those figures were a quote I recieved. Bike scheduled for service 6-1. I think labor estimate was high since motor was coming down anyway to do valve seals under warranty. I realize there are many variables, so i'm just trying to see if estimate i recieved is in the ballpark.Hoping to hear from some members who had upgrade done, and what parts they chose. I appreciate your reply, and hope to get a few more. Thanks.
You will remember that most work has a rate to show the time it takes per job done. A good mechanic can do it in less, plus a good dealer will not add all the time for each seperate item. IMO I would get several quotes and that will tell a hose job or not as you might have something we have not considered...
My gut reaction is "not outrageous but probably high." Maybe dealer is trying to earn some easy extra dough since they will have to tear down for warranty work anyways...then charge you what it would normally cost anyways...make a decent profit. I echo the earlier comment on that cam - just make sure you don't overcam the motor, and that's a bigger cam than I usually hear about in the 1550 motors...my father has the 257, but that's in a 103 stroker with SE heads, high compression, etc.
